2008/04/25listen up : frightened rabbit
you should always be nice to bunnies, first of all. don't scare them!
second of all, i have fallen head over heels in love with this song. at first it took me a while to really get into it, especially the vocals, but when i finally took it all in and really listened to the lyrics that Scott Hutchison sings with such heartfelt emotion, i realized the underlying message of this song and couldn't help but listen to it over and over again.
And that is you in front of me
And you are back for even more of exactly the same
Well are you a masochist to love a modern leper on his last leg
And you are not ill
And I'm not dead
Doesn't that make us the perfect pair
Just you and me
We'll start again
Frightened Rabbit hail from Scotland (that's right Mahsa, SCOTLAND) and they are playing at Pianos on May 27th and then going on tour with French Kicks! Their album Midnight Organ Fight is out now on Fat Cat Records.

2008/04/23smoosh sparks & sour cherries
Monday night, my friend Bryan and I went to the Music Hall of Williamsburg (it was - confession- the first time I have EVER been there, and I can't believe they turned North 6 into something so awesome) to see Tokyo Police Club. While we were "pre-gaming" 1 dollar Yuenglings at a bar by his office, I asked Bryan who the opening band was and he was like "Smoosh" and I was like "OMG SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!!"
I was really excited, to say the least, since I've loved this band since uh... they were in middle school? Haha. Monday night I was shocked to see how much rockstar sisters Asya and Chloe have grown up. And apparently now they have a little sister who rocks the bass (and did so). Amazing! Even their website has been revamped and now looks all adult and what not. I guess they aren't the novelty act some people wrote them off to be a few years ago...
They performed a cover of "This Modern Love" by Bloc Party that made me endlessly happy.
Smoosh - This Modern Love (Bloc Party cover, live)
Tokyo Police Club were fun as always, although at a certain point you realize that all of their songs are like a minute long, and they all sort of start to sound the same, but you don't care because you keep chugging the sparks you smuggled into the venue and jumping up and down. Or... something like that.

And finally, I missed the return of Gossip Girl to go to this show and drink all the sparks in the world, but I watched it last night and it was pretty awesome to see Chuck Bass on my TV again. Which reminds me that I need to write something about his band and all that (yes, he has one), but I will save that for another time.
Here is the song featured in the OMG (uber sexed up) GG promos, which I LOVE - actually the entire Kills record is pretty damn fantastic.

2008/04/21here we go again! after the jump fest! woot!
In a few short months, it will be Summer and that means the second annual After the Jump Fest! Bigger, better with even more acts and surprise guests, this year the festival takes place along side the city wide music event, Make Music New York (which itself is a part of the worldwide music phenomenon that takes place in 300 cities in 108 countries) on the first day of Summer, June 21st.
After the Jump Fest is the effort of 20 New York City music bloggers whose goal is to help new artists gain exposure while raising money for struggling school music programs. This year, After the Jump is teaming up with The Music Hall of Williamsburg and Galapagos Art Space for a festival stretching from noon until last call. In the next few months, After the Jump blogs will be making more announcements about the festival including new artists and pre-parties. Stay tuned and in the mean time, check out AftertheJumpFest.com for information on our past events and mark your calendars! It's going to be a doozy.

(who were amazing)
(who were also pretty amazing and very fun). sometimes i wish my sister and i could date guys in the strokes and form our own band and perform our songs on gossip girl and be gorgeous and stuff. but the pierces already exhist, so we would just be ripping them off anyways.
more here // photos by the lovely mahsa hojjat
it was seriously a night of gorgeous front women reigning all over the place at bowery last night! i actually wrote this whole amazing entry about SXSW (well okay, it's ,mostly just amazing that i actually WROTE it). then i suddenly found myself sans job and then the adaptor on my laptop MELTED and a new one costs 80 dollars (what the eff apple?!), so as usual i stopped writing for like... a month. oops. but i AM making an effort to go see more bands, now that i have a new job, and i really want to go see your band. and i am also really broke. but i am MAKING AN EFFORT OKAY. wah.
anywho, this show last night was fantastic, and i don't even think it was sold out, and I am sad that I missed Chief, but happy because while they were on I was eating one of the best meals I've had in a long time that I couldn't really afford - but it was delicious!
the duke spirit - you really wake up the love in me
