Honestly I had no idea what to expect from <a href="http://www.everything-everything.co.uk/">Everything Everything's</a> sold out show at Bowery Ballroom last night. This band is so Manchester it hurts my brain. And I mean that in the best way possible, trust. There were so many epic three part harmonies, so much falsetto it was like a falsetto blitzkrieg. Their music has this intensly bi-polar quality to it - one second it's cooing, shrieking, wooing and the next it's melting your face off. I don't even know a better descriptor than that. <br><br>

The bass player also has excellent hair. n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-72266322287999788302013-03-25T17:19:00.001-04:002013-03-25T17:21:07.518-04:00The Joy Formidable - STILL AWESOME. New tour dates, Wolf's Law, video for 'Little Blimp' I had a chance to see the Joy Formidable live at SXSW this year but I was too busy running around a venue working to actually watch the band. This is/was definitely a shame, as they are an excellent live act and I did happen to spy singer Ritzy backstage before hand rocking a dress with some seriously bling-ed out sleeves. The cutest - Ritzy is it - second only to the girl who fronts CHVRCHES who you just want to put in your pocket and keep her there FOR-EV-ER that's how uber adorable she is. I wonder if those two are friends? Someone aught to make that happen pronto.
<br><br>
Anyways, here's a video from the band for their single Little Blimp. Check out the mega crystal bedazzled microphone stand in particular - maybe that's some kind of intense feng shui situation to promote the highest levels of awesomeness. Or it just looks real pretty. I'll let you be the judge. <br><br>

Joy Formidable are literally about to go on tour like ALMOST RIGHT NOW for their first outing in support of their sophomore album <i>Wolf's Law</i>, including two local NYC stops. According to their publicist, the new album has already had praise "foisted upon it." FOISTED. Well consider this an additional foisting of my own.

I'm a simple girl with simple needs. You give me two cute Australian musicians with top-notch dance-pop-electronic sensibilities and you've got an A+ winning combination. And the combination of those two elements currently equals the Adalaide hailing brotherly musician-duo of <a href="http://www.atlasgenius.com/">Atlas Genius</a> who just released their new album "When It Was Now" last week. I was impatiently waiting for it because I'm impatient like that when I just know things are going to be stupidly good (and it is). <br><br> They are also on tour now with Imagine Dragons (another catchy band who had a well-placed song in the series finale episode of Gossip Girl) and are playing at Hammerstein Ballroom on February 23rd. But given my aformentioned impatience for all things stupidly good I will be seeing them tonight at Music Hall of Williamsburg. There shall be dancing. And oogling. <br><br> You can also see them catch them down at SXSW, including a stint at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/426603900756731/">this insane Warner Music showcase</a> that I may or may not be working on. <br><br>

Incase you are somehow unaware, one of my favorite bands, <a href="http://frightenedrabbit.com/">Frightened Rabbit</a>, released a new album yesterday called <i>Pedestrian Verse</i>. IT IS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD. Please listen to it. A lot. n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-47764063354099090522013-01-23T14:22:00.001-05:002013-01-23T14:22:57.070-05:00Foals release new video for "My Number"<iframe width="510" height="287" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QRR_pvZcu-o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br><br>
THIS IS SO CATCHY. The catchiest. Huzzahhh. And can I just say that there has been a serious lack of indie dance music in my life for a while. All of my Spotify playlists have been so melancholy it's a wonder my friends are more worried for me. I'd like to dance my way right out of this dreary time of year and with this new <a href="http://www.foals.co.uk/">Foals album</a> <i>Holy Fire</i> out February 11th the timing couldn't be better. n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-57366377121477250232013-01-07T00:53:00.001-05:002013-01-07T00:54:06.447-05:00New Music from The Changes! <iframe width="500" height="281" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dG3lIs1tpdE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
<br><br>
I'm sure my reasons for posting this track from the band's forthcoming album are self-explanitory, but what a wonderful 2013 treat. Long overdue boys! Can't wait to hear the rest. n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-68949921280847930992013-01-02T10:33:00.000-05:002013-01-02T10:36:57.063-05:00A New Version of MeThis year was a bit of a game changer for me in a lot of ways. New job, new living situation, and fairly significantly, a new way to listen to and consume music. Spotify is great and I'm a big fan, but it has also somehow makes a Year End Album list... difficult to compile.
<br><br>
I really didn't listen to a TON of albums in full this year, but did discover a lot of new artists that I love so I suppose it's a bit of a toss up. Maybe the more significant problem is that, unlike previous years, there just wasn't an album that really really grabbed a hold of me and took me places. Even artists who have made this list in previous years and for whom I have served up endless praise... their new releases left me feeling distant. It just didn't really happen this year for me even though so much new music was released. Maybe my heart wasn't in it? Not sure.
<br><br>
That said... my list is below, and there isn't much more to say. A big part of me feels that this blog has run its course over 10 years since its inception a whole lot has changed and honestly all for the better. While I sometimes miss the days of galvanting around the Lower East Side music haunts thirsting for the best new bands and a vodka open bar, that isn't really what my life looks like at all anymore. Most bloggers I know have already departed the digital scene or replaced their music blogs with different and more grown-up virtual incarnations.
<br><br>
I have a <a href="http://irockitumblr.tumblr.com/">tumblr account</a> over here that I plan on updating more. I will also likely transform I Rock I Roll into more of a lifestyle blog soon enough, to reflect my new interests and passions. Don't get me wrong, I still love music and will probably throw the occasional CMJ showcase and will still be <a href="http://twitter.com/irockiroll">tweeting up a storm</a>, but I think this outlet has outgrown me. Or I've outgrown it. There will be a new version though and it will look like awesome. Of course.
<br><br>
Either way... it has been a grand journey indeed. <br><br>

Anyone familiar with Joe Hawley as a musician (member of Tally Hall), creator and friend will know that there is certainly no one quite like him and subsequently there is no album quite like <a href="http://hawaiipartii.bandcamp.com/">Hawaii Part II</a>. The self-release album, out today on <a href="http://hawaiipartii.bandcamp.com/">Bandcamp</a> after a mysterious weeks-long countdown finally reached zero, never really settles on a particular genre and rather serves a journey for your auditory senses with no roadmap in place except the most unexpected. And this journey, delivered from a collective group of artists that came together under a Japanese moniker that translates to "Miracle Musical," turns out to be a pretty stellar one, to say the least.
<br><br>
Standout tracks include my personal favorite "Labyrinth" featuring vocals from Charlene Kaye and rapping from Shane Maux spun together with the background music from seemingly every 80s Nintendo game theme music ever. Put it on repeat ASAP. Other standouts include the hypnotic "Black Rainbows" - maybe the sequel to Tally Hall's Banana Man if Banana Man found all the really good banana drugs and a sweet sweet jungle groove.
<br><br>
While it's really no miracle that Joe Hawley and the rest of these immensely gifted folks (including fellow Tally Hall bandmates Ross Federman, Rob Cantor and Zubin Sedghi) were able to come together and create and self release album as intricate and imaginative as Hawaii Pt II, fans new and old will certainly be glad that they did.

Hooray! New <a href="http://www.rarariot.com">Ra Ra Riot</a> tunes from their upcoming full-length album "Beta Love" out January 22, 2013 on Barsuk Records. It's the band's first release as a four-piece and I'm really liking the shift to a more electronic sound here. I think it compliments the string section they are known for nicely - definitely a band who are growing up and coming into their own.

I was insanely thrilled to catch <a href="http://www.frightenedrabbit.com">Frightened Rabbit</a> last month at Bowery Ballroom where the band was in excellent spirits and top form as they entertained fans on their final tour stop before heading back into the studio to complete their new album.

Did I say sometimes? I mean ALL THE TIME. Like did you know I djed an afterparty for the Faint in 2005? I mean, apparently that is a think that actually happened! Weirdness. In addition to that kind of nostalgia trip, reading these blog archives is like revisiting a time capsule of bands that I really REALLY loved that - with few exceptions - do not exist anymore. Anyone know what White Light Motorcade is up to these days? Or The Changes (actually I do, they recorded a new album! It's pretty rad. So there is that)?

Should you feel like taking a REAL nostalgia trip, however, bypass this blogspot situation and see the following:

One of the definite highlights of our CMJ day party on Tuesday was <a href="http://www.youwontyouwont.com/you_wont_cmj_2012.html">You Won't</a> - who played a truly fantastic and intimate set to a very packed upstairs lounge. While there was even a "minor" bass amp malfunction in the middle of their set that thankfully didn't create too much of a fire hazard and it didn't seem to faze them at all. With a declaration of "fuck electricity," the duo claimed atop tables in the center of the room and launched into an acoustic performance of "Who Knew" that I won't soon forget. Definitely a band to watch - even <a href="http://www.spin.com/gallery/25-must-see-acts-at-cmj-2012?image=25">SPIN says so</a> - and with <a href="http://www.youwontyouwont.com/you_wont_cmj_2012.html">several more CMJ performances lined up so that you can do just that</a>. n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-50731273780271304922012-10-15T14:16:00.000-04:002012-10-15T14:21:24.476-04:00WHAT BLOG CMJ 2012: I Rock I Roll, Battering Room & Hilly Town Present<img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8184/8090995261_6a9277f241_b.jpg" width="520" border="5">
Oh CMJ, it is the time of year for you again. While as an overall experience you certainly seem to have lost some of your lustre in recent years, you still stand as a nice week every fall where we see our old friends, where week-day drinking is totally acceptable (particularly in the form of Piano's liver enemy #1 margaritas), where a small handful of bands find the recognition they deserve and where - come Sunday - exhaustion reigns supreme.
<br><br>
This year I once again teamed by with my friends at <a href="http://batteringroom.tumblr.com/">Battering Room</a> and <a href="http://hillytown.com/">Hilly Town</a> to put together what I think is a pretty swell line-up of up-and-comers. And of course this party is free, during the day, and at the hands down most convenient of convenient venues - <a href="http://www.pianosnyc.com">Pianos</a> (aka margaritaville).

All I have to say is "sweet stache, bro." Okay and also this reminds me of something I really would have enjoyed in the late 90s back when I was somewhat more emo. But I do also enjoy it now so I guess some things never change.

<br><br>
It is not a secret thing that I have been an obsessive/fan over the band <a href="http://beatradio.org">Beat Radio</a> for um... pretty much forever or at least as long as this blog has been in existence. There are countless reasons for this, not the least of which is the great emails that I receive from singer Brian. Every time they land in my inbox I get super excited and then I click on the email and get MORE EXCITED. This morning's email was no exception, as it gifted me with this awesome cover of Japandroids single "The House That Heaven Built." Japandroids are a punk rock band that Brian "likes a lot" and so do I. Their recent album <i>Celebration Rock</i> is very rad and sure to be on many many year end lists (including my own, perhaps!).
<br><br>
Since Brian was rad enough to share this track with me, I am now sharing it with you. ENJOY!!!

<br><br>
Aaaaaaaaaand it's awesome, which should be a surprise to approximately no one. Or just take from this choice bit straight out of their press release: A swaggering glam strut about a cocky jock playing the jerk, 'Elephant' is <a href="http://www.tameimpala.com/">Tame Impala</a> at their confident (and of course cosmic) best. It's a wild space rock safari and the lift off point to planet Lonerism. Fasten those seat-belts!
<br><br>
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! <-- I added that
<br><br>
Tame Impala's forthcoming sophomore effort, 'Lonerism' will be out in the US on October 9th. No NYC tour dates have been announced... yet.n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-55169032723683686682012-07-24T10:06:00.000-04:002013-02-26T23:08:47.669-05:00smoke em' (electronically) if you've got em - a review of bluCigsBeing in your 20s in New York City was, for me at least, all about trying to find the proper balance between work time and playtime. And when tackling such an exciting and challenging feat in this city especially and one tends to pick up a few "necessary" vices - staying up late, sleeping past noon, boozy brunching at 4, substituting finger foods at random events for actual meals, dating the wrong guys, all that jazz. I'd like to think - or at least I HOPE - that having passed the big 3-0 with a solid job, relationship etc. etc. that I would have overcome most of my bad habits.
<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7265/7636881762_a694b086f8_b.jpg" width="520"><br><br>
Cigarette smoking, however, has always lingered on and off which is something I'm pretty self conscious about particularly as it becomes more socially unacceptable to do so. At my last job we had a nice crew of people who would smoke, which gradually lingered down to two of us standing out side in the freezing cold talking smack and being cold. New York City has become an anti-smokers wet dream and honestly, for good reason. Smoking is gross, and bad for you, and a terrible habit. I KNOW THIS. I mean I also knew that two sliders and a mini quiche at a 3 hour open bar did not a meal substitue make, but I still did it anyways so there you have it.
<br><br>
My boyfriend Greg is also a smoker. We lament this fact all of the time. Lament lament lament. But everyone needs their vices I suppose, and while I've joined a gym and now routinely get 8 hours of sleep more often then not, some vices are always sure to linger. Nevertheless, the two uf us were pretty stoked when bluCigs reached out to me to review their product and do a little giveaway and the bf even agreed to help me write this review. I have to say, I'm not entirely sure WHY they picked me, but I've been curious about the increasing popularity of the product in the marketplace so I figured why not. An old coworker had a electronic cigarette and would puff away at it routinely at his desk without a care in the world. No smoke, no smells, no one even seemed to notice honestly aside from the occasionale plume of vapor occasionally wafting up over his cubicle. We agreed to review the product and selected the Premier Starter Kit from their site (seemed like the right way to go) and selected two flavors, classic tobacco and "vivid vanilla" - I was intrigued by the array flavors such as java jolt, pina colada and cherry crush but Greg was... not so much interested in the schnapps varieties so we decided to stick to mainstays for the purpose of the review.
<br><br>
When the bluCigs delivery finally arrived, Greg immediately commented on the packaging which actually made our bluCigs resemble a fancy smart phone. I am definitely also a sucker for good packaging. We tried them out and found them pretty easy to use, sitting on our couch blowing vapor around while our cat gave us a lot of confused looks. Later that week we found ourselves at an event at Brooklyn Bowl where we smoked the ecigs around some of our smoker and non smoker friends, both whom had a lot of questions about the bluCigs. It was actually a nice change of pace to be able to indulge a bit (or at least feel like we were) without also feeling like social pariahs of sorts. Greg also busted out some interesting factoids such as the 176,250,000 pounds of cigarette butts discarded in one year in the United States alone that we were no longer contributing to. Dude. Gross. The bluCigs premier packs also have a SOCIAL MEDIA FEATURE (which is all the rage these days) - where the pack actually uh... vibrates... when someone is close to you who also smokes bluCigs and has the package on them incase I guess you want to compare notes or something? Maybe it's the new OkCupid for those who are off what my boyfriend refers to as "lady tobacco"... kids today, who am I to judge. You can also turn this feature off if you aren't into meeting strangers and want to e-smoke like the cool loner you are.
<br><br>
Anyways, bluCigs were a fun experiment, definitely saved us some money and made the air around me smell vividly like vanilla rather than nausiatingly nicotine-esque.
<br><br>
<b>If you're interested in trying out bluCigs for yourself, just leave a comment on this entry telling me what your ideal flavor of e-cigarette would be - boisterous bacon? And leave your email address too. One person at random will win a $70 starter kit all of your own. </b><br><br>

As I was prepping some new music for a DJ set recently, I stumbled across this new track from Brooklyn band <a href="http://irockiroll.blogspot.com/2010/01/local-likes-real-estate-and-freelance.html">Freelance Whales</a>. It seemed fitting since I had recently wondered just what happened to them but wow.. when I downloaded this new track "Locked Out" from their new album <i>Diluvia</i> (out October 9 via Mom&Pop/Frenchkiss Records) I was pretty blown away by just how beautiful it was. It was instant love.
<br><br>
I've been DJing more weddings recently and I wish I had another coming up because this song would most definitely make the playlist.

From zee press release:<br>
<i><a href="thesoftpackofficial.com/">The Soft Pack</a> are back with <b>Strapped</b>, available on September 25, 2012. It’s an adventurous album that finds the Los Angeles-based foursome breaking with expectations and exploring the possibilities of how they can push their sound. </i><br><br>
Based on the above track this sounds like it will be a SUPER AWESOME follow up to their rollicking self-titled debut - and right in time for some CMJ action perhaps?n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-85678482356558631242012-06-15T12:05:00.000-04:002012-06-15T12:05:58.997-04:00ETERNAL SUMMERS: Wonder (music video)<iframe width="520" height="293" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LwYg9N8asdM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
There probably is nothing more perfect than listening to the bouncin-good tunes of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/eternalsummers/">Eternal Summers</a> as it feels like summer in Brooklyn might FINALLY be kicking its own ass into high gear. The Virginia band's new album <i>Correct Behavior</i> is out next month from our friends at Kanine and they play Mercury Lounge on July 26th.n.http://www.blogger.com/profile/14051100569697646783noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6288774.post-3445384128185572862012-06-14T17:13:00.001-04:002012-06-15T12:08:33.055-04:00Passion Pit's new video for "Take A Walk"<object id="flashObj" width="480" height="270" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,47,0"><param name="movie" value="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="flashVars" value="videoId=1687925644001&playerID=1526456410001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAAAAAA5vE~,Eeb-O-20Rk-voUNIxqyegf4VCVj0eqb6&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" /><param name="base" value="http://admin.brightcove.com" /><param name="seamlesstabbing" value="false" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="swLiveConnect" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><embed src="http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" flashVars="videoId=1687925644001&playerID=1526456410001&playerKey=AQ~~,AAAAAAAA5vE~,Eeb-O-20Rk-voUNIxqyegf4VCVj0eqb6&domain=embed&dynamicStreaming=true" base="http://admin.brightcove.com" name="flashObj" width="480" height="270" seamlesstabbing="false" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" swLiveConnect="true" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash"></embed></object>

Singer/song writer/amazing talent Julie Ann Bee crafts beautifully simplistic pop/rock/folky songs that are stripped of all pretext and polish and come straight from the heart. I'm smitten with everything she has done with her musical project <a href="http://www.seaofbees.com/">Sea of Bees</a>, including her new album Orangefarben and older track below off her 2009 EP.

In other news, summer has fully hit the ground running and hopefully hasn't already peaked although I'm going to see Radiohead tonight and not much in life ever really tops that. Sorry to not have blogged more lately but keep up with my musical leanings on
