2009/02/26SPICY TIMES @ Union Hall.
WE’VE GOT A DATE WITH THE NIGHT!
Spicy Times, my side project of spiciness with the amazing Jinners, brings you specially curated music every month at Union Hall! This month we’ve got the 7” release party from Uninhabitable Mansions!
“Brooklyn future sensations Uninhabitable Mansions… members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Au Revoir Simone, UM shakes up a frothy combination: 1/3rd early Rough Trade, 1/3rd gauzy New Zealand pop, and 2/3rds classic ’90s indie rock. Wait, that’s too many thirds.” — WFMU
I saw this band at one of their first shows at Pianos, last year, (it may have actually been their first show come to think of it) and I thought they were REALLY great. I mean, you know this blog has had some serious CYHSY love, and Robbie was always my CYHSY fave because he would jump around and get super excited during their shows. Therefore, this band is a WIN.
Uninhabitable Mansions - We Misplaced A Cobra In The Uninhabitable Mansions (WFMU)
“…extremely catchy ’60s-ish guitar pop.” — Brooklyn Vegan
This will be the first time I've seen Spacecamp, but Jin assures me they are fab and I've really been digging their demos. I mean, it's a song about being high and a song about girls and bikes! What is better than that? NOTHING (except whiskey and kittens but maybe they have songs about those things also. find out tomorrow!)
Spacecamp - High
“A glockenspiel, accordion and ukulele later, Ciannella had the beginnings of a project called Vessels…Ciannella’s vocal, soft but controlled, slides around in a haunting alto…” — SILive.com
Lovely tunes by six lovely ladies from Staten Island. not to be confused with the alternative four piece rock band from the UK of the same name (yikes, confusing sorta?). I love anything with a glockenspiel, it's a fact.
Vessels - Wednesday
See you Friday peoples!

the dig. dig it?
last night i went to bowery ballroom to see up and coming local band The Dig open for Mystery Jets. i had heard some rumblings about them from friends in the industry, and after last night i think i can understand why they are starting to generate a good deal of buzz. all in all their music is pretty straightforward rock with some really strong hooks here and there, and they are all young and cute enough to be make-out worthy (hooray!). But beyond the obvious selling points, I think this band has a LOT of potential and talent and could grow into something pretty fucking awesome. I've had their three track ep on repeat all morning long and now totally want to listen to more.
ALSO: the band recently opened for Girl Talk, are heading out on tour (dates below),and their website has a sweet pink robot on it.

dinner with diesel
i haven't done an event write up on here in a while that wasn't an actual concert, but this one was pretty amusing so hopefully you'll enjoy it. last thursday my friend the lovely abbey of sup' mag and i traveled to midtown to check out the opening of the new Diesel Planet store on 5th avenue. i don't actually own anything (sorry!) from diesel, so clearly shopping was not on the agenda. instead we were going to check out their opening gimmick which was to have five young local "legendary" residents having a fancy dinner together... in the display window of the store.
and... that's pretty much exactly what it was. on the night that we went, the theme was obviously music (other nights involved socialites ala Blair Waldorf, the NY Giants, etc). included in the dining was the host Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship ftw!), Dan Keyes from Young Love, Louis Epstein (Jump Into The Gospel), Prince Terrence (Spank Rock/Santogold), Ryland Blackinton (Cobra Starship) and Theophilus London (who I saw perform with Atrak at the Belvedere IX event the week before).
when we got there, teenage girls (and their moms) had already swarmed the outside of the store at the corner of 5th and 54th street, mostly to get closer to the object of their affection/lusting/obsession (plz stop sending me hate mail ok girls?), Saporta. we went inside the store and hit the top shelf open bar, though we were denied food because... it's fashion week and no one needs to actually eat right? the new store is actually really nice inside - three floors of really cute stuff. they even have a full length mirror that is actually a camera running on five second delay - just so that you can check out what your ass looks like in your new diesel jeans! seriously!
once properly Moet buzzed, we went back outside to see what the scene looked like thru the window. unfortunately the one major flaw in the whole event is that while you could watch the guys sitting around nom nom-ing on salads and chasing them with tequila shots, you couldn't hear what they were actually talking about over dinner, which I can only imagine would have been like "dude, these people are all watching us eat dinner and taking our pictures, plz pass the booze because this is bizarro." actually, though, the guys all seemed to really enjoy themselves (which reminds me, there were no female musicians who could have been at this dinner party? when was the last time you were at an all-guy dinner party anyways?).
when the dining was done, Abbey and I got in a quick interview with Gabe, who was utterly as charming as one might expect. When I asked him what four people, living or dead, he would want to have a dinner party with (example of: why I do not ever do interviews on this blog.. haha), he said Benjamin Franklin, Mickey Rourke (but maybe just Randy the Ram?) and Abbey and me (aww). Then Abbey's camera died before Gabe launched into a really entertaining story about the link between Stella and Gossip Girl that most people probably never have picked up on. Darn!
All in all, it was an interesting concept from Diesel, and their new store is supes nice, and if anyone wants to send me some diesel jeans or the new Cobra Starship album when it comes out, I would have no real objections to that.

2009/02/19It's Blitz! WOOO!
Finally finally finally the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have put out a smoking hot track. Karen O put some spice back into her life!!!!! This first single from the band's new album It's Blitz makes me super excited (could you tell? I also ate a packet of fun dip in lieu of an actual lunch which might also have something to do with it), and I think someone amazing needs to remix it ASAP.
About the new disc, Karen O says, "We've got a death grip on the adolescent way of feeling things." OH SNAPS. Let's hope I don't have to call her a liar later on. The album comes out on April 14th, so you can listen to it while you do your taxes at the last minute I suppose.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero
It's Blitz! track listing:
2. Heads Will Roll
3. Soft Shock
5. Dull Life
6. Shame and Fortune
8. Dragon Queen
10. Little Shadow

2009/02/11faunts : it hurts me all the time
February is a pretty dark month, punctuated by one really annoying romance related holiday. Therefore, this song is really appealing to me right now, although it has a lot of other things going for it (lovely floaty shoegaze goodness, yay).
Faunts are from Edmonton Canada and have an album coming out on the 17th called Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. I'm going to get all their music and just zone out for a while I think... until spring comes around.

I found this band through my lovely friend Sam, who is currently studying abroad in London and writes this hilarious blog with her friend James, who is studying abroad in Buenos Aires. I've always been partial (to say the least) to British bands, so I'm pretty excited to be tuned in to all of Sam's new discoveries while she is drinking cider and living it up in the UK.
This band, Screaming Lights, hails from Liverpool and reminds me a bit of Editors although not as gloomy, and they have toured as openers for Mystery Jets and played with my faves, Late Of The Pier. Also, the start of the track I'm about to post totally starts off sounding like it's some techno club track but IT IS NOT. Just wait for it... it gets pretty epic.
Screaming Lights - GMN
Their debut album should be out this year.
