2005/12/19music, mayhem and.. monkeys
Music fans never get enough sleep. I feel like I've been sleep deprived for just about all of the 365 days that made up 2005. So it goes, I suppose. But overall, I think it was a pretty interesting year for me with music. I def. saw less than I did in 2004 (or at least it feels that way), but I also feel like I developed several really significant new band-loves in my life and really went out of my way to focus this blog on the sounds that I REALLY love and believe in. I hope you have enjoyed it. Thursday night's Tinselfrenzy party involved a selection of those very bands, and overall I'm really excited and happy with how everything turned out. I thought the bill had was diverse enough to be interesting to a good variety of people and at the same time attract people to sounds they may have never heard before. Oh yeah, and there was tinsel everywhere and free cookies. We aim to please! Of course, I was most jonesed to get my Chicago music fix from out-of-towners The Changes (had I not mentioned that before? haha) and I spent the majority of my weekend (aside from having amazing dinner party conversations about monkeys and scarlet johanssen... no joke) watching this band play the same set (almost exactly I think?) at three different venues around the city. While I think it's safe to say that they are still improving and have no where to go but up, they definitely made a few new fans around here over their weekend jaunt and that's awesome to say the least. That said, I thought every band really gave it their all on Thursday, most of all Beat Radio, who played sans their drummer because he was in a car accident and didn't show up for the gig! Fortunately he is fine, but the band played on and really proved to me that not only are they awesome guys devoted to their music and their fans, but they are REALLY talented to boot - still managing to impress a mostly new audience with only 3/4ths of their group. Honestly, if you don't know how much I love The Diggs and Morning Theft... then just look through the archives of this blog. As I said before... big things in 2006... big big things. So on Wednesday I'm leaving for my much needed winter vacation, over which I will hopefully have time to really contemplate doing some sort of best of/top ten/what rocked my little world list. MAYBE. Or I will just sleep a lot and eat a lot of hotdogs and go see The Changes more. You never know.... If not, just come see me DJ at Sin-e bar tomorrow night at 10pm and I'll PLAY IT ALL FOR YOU. What an awesome deal that is. Have a happy holidays! --- Nora posted by n. @ 12/19/2005
2005/12/15for the rest of usToday is an awesome day. Also, I think we might get a festivus pole for tonight. Okay that's all for today, see you at Rothko! posted by n. @ 12/15/2005
2005/12/14everybody loves a glockenspiel!Hey people -- anyone have a glockenspiel? Or know where I can get one for The Changes? Please let me know asap -- IM me or email me or comment here. Thank you! posted by n. @ 12/14/2005
2005/12/13tinselfrenzy... one day away! get out your yarmuclaus...So, our holiday show is tomorrow night at Rothko and I could not be more excited if I tried. Seriously, the bands are going to be great and the DJs will be even better. Last night I was at a party for the release of the movie The Family Stone (which was EXCELLENT might I add) and the DJ was so godawful that I really really do not understand people who gripe about Ultragrrrl and Karen Plus One's dj prowess at all! The guy was completely schizophrenic on the decks and actually tried to mix Kanye West with the theme song from Peanuts at one point... I shit you not. He could not pick a genre, he could not beat match, he couldn't even BLEND anything together. He did play Rick Springfield though, but I think he tried to mix that with Feliz Navidad (no... SERIOUSLY) so.. whatever. Tomorrow night will be way better. To get you in the mood, here is a track from each of the bands that are playing. Enjoy! Morning Theft - Always A Bridesmaid Beat Radio - Mexico The Changes - Not Too Serious (an older song, but I love how Darren sings it) The Diggs - Trouble Everyday Lakota - Quiet Like Graves Also quickly, please don't forget to go and vote for the Plug Awards, which feature a TON of great indie bands and also give props to awesome blogs like Brooklyn Vegan who put mine to shame. In my opinion, at least one of the bands playing Rothko tomorrow should be a nominee next year, if not all of them! So please vote, and come to our show tomorrow. posted by n. @ 12/13/2005
2005/12/12THE next big thing: The Changes return to NYC
As I'm sure you all know by now (and if you don't, pay attention to this post!), 2005 would not be complete without one more NYC visit from my favorite new band "discovery" of the year, The Changes. I know that I have prattled on endlessly about how much I love this band and how worthy they are of your attention, but honestly people these guys are the real deal and they are going huge places -- the band just confirmed that they are playing the opening gala of the Sundance Film Festival! But before they go and rub elbows with the big wigs and sip hot cocoa with Lindsay Lohan, the band will grace NYC with three great shows. Here are the details -- and also please note that the first show is my crazy not to be missed holiday party. See you this weekend! Thursday, Dec 15th @ Rothko (Tinselfrenzy!) with Morning Theft, Beat Radio, The Diggs and Lakota. Set time 10pm Friday, Dec 16th @ Trash Bar (in williamsburg), set time 9pm Saturyday, Dec 17th @ Mercury Lounge with Tralala, Palomar, The Rinse and Bound Stems (also from Chicago and also awesome!), set time 10pm. HERE ARE SOME SONGS THAT I ACTUALLY HAVE NEVER POSTED! whoa... the excitement! The Changes - Can't Decide (demo) The Changes - The Machine The Changes - If I Tried posted by n. @ 12/12/2005

Check out the first track, "Loaded." And also... New Ghostland Observatory tracks!!! From their new album "Paparazzi Lightening" (almost as good of a title as "Delete Delete I Eat Meat"), which comes out in January and which HOPEFULLY means a return trip to NYC rocking the white on white ensemble. Finally, check out The Fine Lines, four very young and very hot (and did I mention young?) boys from NYC who sound sort of like a more polished Strokes. They are playing at Fat Baby on the 20th. And that's all she wrote. posted by n. @ 12/08/2005

2005/12/05my blog becomes a holiday partylast year nicola and i threw a holiday party. it was in brooklyn, and all the people we had dj have gone on to fabulous things like huge awesome job promotions and hot new albums... that sort of thing. but a year ago we subjected them to mistletoe and santa hats and jello shots and... okay... some thugs here or there. this year we are going for a more indie rock friendly approach by moving our party to Rothko and adding a few of our favorite bands (much like raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens and whathaveyou) to the mix. so with that I'm very excited to announce tinselfrenzy!, a lineup of five bands that you seriously need to watch out for in 2006 - four locals and one band coming in from my fabulous hometown. please save the date and come celebrate whatever festivus you desire. posted by n. @ 12/05/2005
