Local Natives : News! New Video! Yay!

Airplanes

Local Natives | MySpace Music Videos

I'm swamped at the office today, so I'm posting this new video for Local Natives (debuted today on myspace. gross. what the hell is myspace? haha). and then copying from this press release. if you need to know that i'm stoked on this, Gorilla Manor was in my top 10 albums of last year (when it was released in europe), just because i was that enamored with it.

Los Angeles quintet Local Natives announced today that fans can now pre-order an exclusive deluxe package of their critically acclaimed debut Gorilla Manor on the band’s website. The digital pre-order includes instant gratification downloads of album standouts “Camera Talk” and “Sun Hands,” along with a demo recording of Talking Heads cover “Warning Sign,” plus a live video and mp3 courtesy of KEXP, and (yes, there’s more) a live video of “Wide Eyes” from a Paris performance. Fans can listen to and watch all of the content on the band's website. A pre-order of the CD or vinyl from Insound also includes the bonus “Sun Hands” seven inch, complete with an exclusive b-side.

Pre-Order Gorilla Manor Here

Enjoy! See you tomorrow when hopefully people will be done creaming themselves over the apple maxi pad.

Class Actress is a class act.

hi guys. so. i'm going to file this one under "singer songwriters i was never really into (because that is really, most of the time, not my bag) basically re-inventing themselves into something i like quite a lot." a few years ago Elizabeth Harper was one of these aformentioned singer songwriters. I recall hearing about her here and there, most likely from my friends and fellow bloggers who do really covet the coffee shop corner/living room/rockwood music hall scene more than i particularly do.

fast forward to now, and Harper is now lending her vocal and songwriting skills (and she totally has them, don't get me wrong) to an electro-pop trio made up of herself, and producers Scott Rosenthal and Mark Richardson called Class Actress. this is suddenly on paper a recipe for something i am totally down with and even better is that it's actually quite good upon first listen, especially as far the hit-or-miss realm of "electro-pop from Brooklyn" tends to go.

Class Actress plays at Glasslands on Feb 6th and then are opening for Yeasayer on Feb 9th (the same day as the release of their EP Journal of Ardency).

DELPHIC let's dance.

Altenative dance bands are all the rage, don't you know? Well if you don't know, it doesn't really matter, because I have been really enjoying them lately, and wanted to share a few choice picks. And so we have... Delphic, who are coming to the US from Manchester to... play Coachella. So far. Not very convenient but hopefully they will follow that up with some US dates soon. Judging from their press photo I would say that they are clearly dorks who love techno with good melodies, which I give two thumbs way up for on all points. Euphoric 80's ass shaking for all.

Delphic - Doubt

Delphic - Submission

Here are some other things worth listening to vaguely along the same lines. Have yourself a hump day par-tay.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool - Dance The Way I Feel
Hot Chip - Take It In
Yeasayer - One
Neon Indian - Deadbeat Summer

Quick Note to all PR Peoples

The other day it was brought to my attention that some pr/promotion companies are still mailing CDs to an old address of mine. If you are planning to mail me anything please just email me first and I'll make sure you have the most updated location! Also, I always prefer digital copies of anything if at all possible.

THE JOY FORMIDABLE!

Last night, UK band The Joy Formidable TORE UP a stuffed to-the-brim sold out room at Union Hall. Apparently Passion Pit toured the with them abroad and loved them so much the convinced their label to fly the band to the US to open for them at Terminal 5. Their success is a win for everyone, because Joy Formidable added two extra headlining shows at much smaller venues - last night at UH and tonight at Pianos.

And since they will NOT be appearing at SXSW, if you are in NYC tonight and looking for some sick new music to check out, Pianos is the place to be (especially if you like your rock music dark and with lots of distortion). I mean, last night petite powerhouse singer Ritzy Bryan (best name evs) actually couldn't play an encore because she had basically destroyed her guitar during their set. That shit is crazy/awesome, and she apologized with such a sweetness you'd hardly think it was even possible for her to be so hardcore.

The Joy Formidable - Whirring

The Joy Formidable - The Greatest Light Is The Greatest Shade

Check out the band rocking out last night here:

Local Likes (Real Estate and Freelance Whales)

Apologies for the lack of updates last week - had some technical difficulties here (ie: not being able to access any of my music online for like four days and subsequently having a mini-life breakdown). but now all is back up and running, so here are two bands that I have been listening to forever and neglecting to write about - it happens!

First up: Real Estate Finally got to check them out live for the first time last week at a slam-packed Brooklyn Bowl. Seriously I have never ever seen that venue more crowded (although it WAS a free show, and I didn't attend those Dan Deacon shows over the summer). Opener Babies (a combo of members of Woods and Vivian girls) were fun pop-punk with girl/boy dueling vocals that - while being very off-key sometimes to a cringeworthy degree - managed to still be totally enjoyable to watch and bop along to. I'd probably even like them more if I knew the songs better. Real Estate launched into their set with Beach Comber, by far their catchiest tune and then played a nice mellow set - perhaps a little too mellow at times as it was crowded, warm, and I found myself just wanting to cuddle up and have some nap time. Still, I love heart that mellow-ness, like a warm blanket.... or something.

They are playing again on Friday with Beach Fossils and The Beets and then take off on a European jaunt which brings them back to Brooklyn for a March 12th show at MHOW.

Real Estate - Beach Comber

Real Estate - Fake Blues

So seriously, shoot me for not having written about this band before. Freelance Whales might not have a steady job or health insurance (see what I did there), but fuck they are awesome. It only took one listen to "Generator (First Floor)" - actually maybe I got half way through the song, before I declared THIS IS GREAT. And lately I've been having a hard time loving things with that sort of immediacy, so I was pretty stoked. They have opened for bands like Fanfarlo (yayyy) and their debut LP Weathervanes, sure to be filled with dreamy, layered goodness, is out on March 16h on Frenchkiss records (btdubbs Frenchkiss is putting out so much amazing shit lately - Antlers, Passion Pit, ftw).

Catch Freelance Whales on January 20th at Mercury Lounge with Still Life Still.

Happy New Year Happy New Music!!!!! - Via Audio

It's 2010! On NYE my boyfriend kept asking people what year it was, and they would tell him and then he would hug them. All of them. It was adorable (albiet somewhat time consuming). He is very excited for this year, and so am I - mostly because of all the SWEET NEW MUSIC that is going to be released. For example, I totally forgot that Arcade Fire is putting on a new album, which fills me with hope for LIFE. That is a good feeling.

Today I'm previewing another new release from one of my long time-ish local faves, Via Audio. I originally posted about them three years ago before they released their debut LP, 2007's Say Something. That album, like the upcoming Animalore, was produced by Jim Eno of Spoon and was chock full of quirky indie pop - although judging from the sample track below it seems like maybe they have gone a bit more disco? Either way, "Babies" is a super fun tune, featuring the chorus: "I know the world is overcrowded, but i wanna make babies with you" - is that fucking romantic or WHAT.

Check it out - Animalore is out March 9th (my birthday! wahoo!) on Undertow.

Via Audio - Babies

They will also be playing at Union Hall with Pattern Is Movement (SICK SHOW ALERT) on February 25th and will appear at SXSW.
