the irockiroll friday mixtape

first, guess this band*

anyways... since it seemed like people enjoyed the valentines related mixes i made last week, i decided to make this a re-occuring blog "theme" thingy. this weeks is mostly all new music, though that won't always be the case. if anyone wants to throw out some themes too, I can work with them. I pretty much make play lists for everything that I do (there is a itunes playlist for when I do my laundry), so this should be fun.

The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead

The Dodos - Fools (another band I want to see at SXSW for sure)

Cassettes Won't Listen - Fuck and Run

The Postelles - White Night

Your Vegas - In My Head

Headlights - Cherry Tulips (playing at Mercury Lounge on Sunday)

Mobius Band - Digital Love (Daft Punk Cover)

Air Traffic - Come On

Glen Hansard - Fallen From The Sky

Vampire Weekend - The Kids Don't Stand A Chance

* it's the cribs! how cute is that!

bands i want to see at sxsw - the duke spirit

I have to be honest, but I had pretty much forgotten all about UK band The Duke Spirit. Their debut album Cuts Across The Land was one of my favorites back in 2005 after my friend Peter came back from SXSW and played "Lion Rip" for me on his ipod while we were having dinner. Nevertheless, that was almost 3 years ago and so many bands have come and gone since then that I suppose The Duke Spirit just got lost in the constant shuffle that is my musical radar.

Thankfully the band has a follow-up album out now, Neptune, that is possibly even better than their first. It's just the kind of dark and moody rock-shoegaze that makes me want to wear a striped shirt and sit in the corner of a dark bar. Maybe smoking cloves, but probably not because cloves are stinky. Imagery aside, I am really liking the new record a lot, and have put this band on my MUST SEE for SXSW list, since catching them live has inexplicably alluded me up until now.

OMG WOW. new Morning Theft album - FREE!

I feel like this has been 83975892735 years in my indie rock dreams in the making, but now it is here and I could not possibly be more stoked to get this album. as anyone who has read this blog for the past 4+ (holy crap) years knows, Morning Theft are one of my favorite favorite favorite NYC bands. They make no muss or fuss straight up great alternative rock and roll without all the hype and gimicks, that take me back to a happy music place circa the early 90s.

And starting today, as an example of their super awesomeness, they are offering their new album "Between Walls" for FREE DOWNLOAD on their website, so just browse over here and enjoy.

Oh and as if that wasn't cool enough, they are also running a contest where you can win a FREE NINTENDO Wii... since they refused to just hand it over to me, sadly.

bands i want to see at sxsw - the republic tigers

SXSW is always overwhelming blah blah blah. This is well acknowledged so I'll spare you the melodramatics. A coworker of mine who is headed down to austin recently looked over the posted list of bands with me, and we both basically sat there just a wee bit stumped as to what we had even heard of much less were inclined to ABSOLUTELY MUST check out. So I'm going to take this one thing at a time, and see what I can find.

Lucky for me, the first band I am totally SXSW crushing on is playing SIX SHOWS down in Austin, so I'd say the odds of me getting to see them are pretty darn good. The Republic Tigers hail from the heart of the midwest (Kansas City) and have an EP out now on Chop Shop records (run by my personal hero and uber music supervisor Alex Patsavas and my super awesome ex-coworker John Rubeli).

Their album is due to drop next month and they have already (duh) been all over Gossip Girl (Chuck Bass 4-ever) and Pastavas's other shows, and I can't get this "Buildings and Mountains" song out of my head. Girlfriend obviously knows what she is doing, so here are some tunes.

The Republic Tigers - Buildings and Mountains

The Republic Tigers - The Drums
