new editors : an end has a start

As if the title of the sophomore effort from one of my favorite UK bands, Editors, wasn't seemingly profound enough, upon giving the album a few listens it seems that the songs within are just as conceptually earnest. As quoted in their press release, lead singer, lyricist, and dreamboat Tom Smith says about the new record and its overall message, “Realizing everything comes to an end is important and I think we’ve done our best to make it something glorious and uplifting as well as scary.”

While I dont think that a lot of the material on And End.. really strays that much in mood or feeling from The Back Room (the title track is the closest thing to Munich), I do get a definite sense of what Smith is referring to.

This is not happy stuff, but it is unquestionably engaging -- I honestly can't remember a recent vocalist I felt more of an emotional connection to than Smith. As he sings on the track "The Weight Of The World" - "every little piece of your life will add up to one, every little piece of your life will mean something to someone." And on "Bones," Smith belts "in the end, all you can hope for, is the love you felt to equal the pain you've gone thru." That's some powerful (and ok, depressing) shit, kids.

ANYWAYS, enough of that "deep" stuff, the album will be out in the US on July 17th and they will follow it up with a tour in September. YAY!

i'm so glad this really happened!

THE SMASHING PUMPKINS DESCEND ON THE CITY OF LIGHT
FOR FIRST PERFORMANCE SINCE 2000;

BAND EARNS RAPTUROUS RESPONSE FROM FANS AT SOLD-OUT SHOW AT THE HISTORIC GRAND REX THEATRE IN PARIS, FRANCE

Taking the stage for the first time since December 2, 2000, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS drew a rapturous response tonight (May 22) from 2200 fans who packed the historic and elegantly appointed Grand Rex in Paris, France. It was the much-anticipated first stop on the band’s world tour, and tickets for the intimate and wide-ranging three-hour show had sold out within minutes of going on sale. The Parisians gave the band a true hero’s welcome as they debuted material from the July 10 release ZEITGEIST (Martha’s Music/Reprise)--their first album of new material since 2000--alongside an array of Pumpkins classics and fan favorites that have defined the alternative music era and underlined the band’s diversity. *See the evening’s set list at the end of release.

ZEITGEIST—which features the just-released single “Tarantula,” now buzzing loudly at Rock and Alternative radio as well as all over the internet----represents a powerful rebirth and reaffirmation of the Smashing Pumpkins by two of its key members, main singer-songwriter and guitarist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. At the Grand Rex, they welcomed Jeff Schroeder (guitar) and Ginger Reyes (bass) to the line-up, which is supported by keyboardist Lisa Harriton.

Next up for the Pumpkins: they're headlining major European festivals from May 28 at Holland's Pinkpop festival through June 17 at Switzerland's Greenfield Festival, returning to Europe August 17 in Belgium (Pukkelpop Festival) and England August 24 (Leeds Festival) and August 26 (Reading Festival) as well performing in Istanbul, Turkey September 1. The band’s itinerary includes a “Live Earth” performance July 7 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ and headlining festival appearances at the Virgin Festivals in Washington, DC (August 5) and Toronto, ONT (September 8).

The Pumpkins also announced two sets of residency gigs in the U.S.: nine unprecedented shows at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC (June 23, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30 and July 2, 3, and 5) plus 11 shows at the historic Fillmore in San Francisco (July 15, 16, 18, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30 and 31 and August 1). At these very special and intimate residencies—both of which instantly sold out--the band will vary set lists from night to night. They’ll perform songs from Zeitgeist and Pumpkins classics plus retool songs that didn’t make it onto Zeitgeist and even offer tunes written the day of the show. These shows will give fans a unique opportunity to see the Pumpkins inside the process of creation and operating in the spur of the moment. The band will be taking chances in the hope of taking fans, and their music, to new places.

Check out the band’s tour dates at www.smashingpumpkins.com and www.myspace.com/smashingpumpkins.

monday love songs - growing up with The Lodger

Get excited kids, because there are another up and coming band from Leeds ready to come over and concur American soil!

Hahaha, I can't even count the number of times I have read variations on that statement in a press release before. Regardless, after reading briefly about this three-piece pop band The Lodger, and then taking a listen to their first single, I will admit that there is nothing unenjoyable about this upbeat goodness. Their debut album, cheekily titled "Grown Ups", will be released in the US on June 5th, and will all the praise the NME has (of course) been heaping on them, it is fairly certain that we will be hearing more about this group very very soon.

The Lodger - Kicking Sand

Here is a link to the video too, where you will see that we are certainly not dealing with any grown-ups here. How old are these kid??? I wonder if babies in the UK are born wielding guitars and drumsticks now and if maybe soon the NME will start visiting playdates looking for new talent... haha.

i can haz internets, and ur spoons!

hey everyone. so i've returned after a week of "exhile" in the midwest. little irockiroll was graduating from her place of higher education, and while chicago has a lot of really awesome things (food & bands in particular), for me it also comes with no cable tv, and, more importantly and tragically, DIAL UP INTERNET. yes, my family, technology wise, is still hovering somewhere circa 1994. have you forgotten what a modem sounds like? because if so i can remind you, my friend.

so that is my excuse for lack of updates, but i am back and now have the rest of the summer filled with awesome new releases to look forward to, and my little sister has the task of finding a job and moving out of our house to look forward to (hahaha).

Upon returning to the world of high speed, I was a little more than excited to get ahold of the new Spoon record. Honestly, I feel like I have never really appreciated Spoon as much as I should, even though I love all of their albums, they are just never the band that I name drop when people asks me what my favorite bands are (I hate that question anyways, but still..). And yet every time Spoon puts out a new record, I always find myself exclaiming "THIS IS SO AWESOME" and telling my friends how awesome it is. And now I am telling you.

Oh and the album is called "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" which I find ridiculously cute -- it's the noise babies make! And also the noise my drunk friends sometimes make too.. but that is an entirely different story.

Spoon - You Got Yr Cherry Bomb

Spoon - The Ghost Of You Lingers

This summer, you and I can check out Spoon when they play my summer festival of choice, the Virgin Fest in Baltimore, alongside my FAVORITE BAND OMG EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER (and no it is not Peter Bjorn and John). In the coming weeks I will be talking about Virgin Fest a lot, because it will probably (undoubtably) be the musical highlight of my summer, not just because I will (hopefully) be sober enough to remember most of it... unlike...oh i dont know... Lollapalooza 2006? Oops.

Single day tickets are also going onsale TOMORROW, so you don't have to shell out all your weekly allowance to those bastards on Craigslist!

forget radio rips, love Interpol

what i have learned today is that, undoubtably, real versions of Interpolsongs rock 38597235897235 times harder than radio rips, and now i am sure that i absolutely LOVE this song and my head will probably fully explode when I get my hands on Our Love To Admire.

YAY FOR INTERPOL!!!

two shows! two shows!

First of all, EVERYTHING IS SOLD OUT THIS WEEK. Well, not exactly, but all the big shows that I would love to have gone to if I had a lot of disposable income (I do not) are. In any event, I still managed to come up with two shows (there are def more than this but i only have time to blog about two right now!) you should check out this week if you are so inclined. And one of them is FREE (although this means you should probably get there really early!). I actually think I might try to get into Arcade Fire tonight and have coerced the boyfriend to come up to 175th street with me, so cross your fingers for us. Anyways...

I don't think I have to tell you why you should go see Beat Radio, because I have said it a THOUSAND TIMES ALREADY, but this band is amazing, so please go. And if you haven't already, go download their ENTIRE album for free on the internet. I wish more bands did things like Beat Radio...

I have never really been much of a HUGE Strokes fan. I mean, I LIKE them fine, dont get me wrong, but I have never been over the moon about this band - my little sister is a different story. I guess that's why I wasn't exactly freaking out either when I heard that Albert Hammond Jr had a solo record out. Then when I was in SXSW we managed to sneak into the Blender party and discovered that he was about to perform and I found myself really enjoying his simple yet entertaining set and discovering that Albert is a very capable front man! Since returning from Austin I've given Yours To Keep a few listens and found it just as good as his live set, so this free show at Hiro on Thursday is def. worth checking out. Oh, and I hear he is single now so if that is any incentive to the ladies... there you go.

Beev also has all the info you need on the two free YYYs shows TODAY, where you can wear masks and be filmed and what have you.

monday love songs - it's all behind you

Two years ago, around this time of year, I was off on a roadtrip across the US (actually we were driving to Coachella so it was probably a bit earlier than now, but you get the idea). I am also currently reading the book Killing Your To Live in which author Chuck Klosterman also drives across the country.

The only thing our roadtrips really had in common, however, is that we both spent a good deal of time compiling appropriately awesome music to take on our respective journeys. While Klosterman took something like 600 albums with him, I was much more selective, but we both at lesat recognize the importance of having an excellent soundtrack for any long car journey.

With the weather getting nicer now, hopping in a car and going for a long drive (preferably with the top down if uh... i could afford a convertible) seems like an ideal activity. And if I was going to embark on such a journey, my song selection for this monday would be an absolute MUST. The track is from local band The Undisputed Heavyweights, which can be downloaded for free as part of the awesome Cross Pollination Mixtape that you can (and should) learn more about here. I have spent many enjoyable Tuesday evenings at this weekly concert series that takes place upstairs at Pianos, and the Heavyweights are without a doubt one of the better up-and-coming nyc bands around.

So take a listen to this track and I'm sure you'll agree that it would be pretty much perfect to listen to while driving down a winding country road on a day like today.

the cribs: new album, sounding great, no blood, aging well

I suppose the headline for this entry pretty much says it all, but last night The Cribs seriously rocked Mercury Lounge. I've loved this band for about three years now - three adorable brothers with catchy songs and tons of crazy energy is hard NOT to love as far as Im concerned. The band have a new album coming on Warner in the US July 17 (digital May 22), which was produced by Alex Kapranos - I'm currently reading his "Sound Bites" book, btw, and it's not half bad but it makes me REALLY hungry every time I read it. Oh and the album is titled Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever. Clever. I have Cribs needs.

It was still a bit difficult to assess the new material at the show, but the songs from The New Fellas got HUGE reactions. The last time I saw the band they were opening for their friends (and my faves) Kaiser Chiefs at Webster Hall, so it was refressing to see the boys rock out a much more intimate venue. Big A+ also to the dancing/flailing/moshing crowd last night at Merc, who OKAY may have mostly been brits (I am not sure on this) but really did add to the live experience. See, kids, having fun makes shows better! OH, and there was NO BLEEDING AT THE MOUTH. We thought we saw some for a minute, but no. Good, clean, injury free fun and some booty shaking too!

The Cribs - Men's Needs

The Cribs are playing Merc again tonight with the awesome Ra Ra Riot (you can probably get tickets if you show up at the venue, it wasn't totally overcrowded last night at all), and then have dates the next day in Boston and then at Bamboozle. You can also see some great photos of last nights show over here.

ALSO, I can't talk about last nights show and NOT mention White Rabbits, who are honestly going to the THE next NYC band to make it big in my opinion. They weren't quite as bombastic at at Merc for me as they were at Luna Lounge a few weeks ago, but their album Fort Nightly is solid from beginning to end. Big things for these lads.

White Rabbits - While We Go Dancing

Spin.com covers the show here including one VERY VERY VERY hot cribs photo that I kind of want to print out and hang over my bed. Yay.

zomg a blog by me about flosstradamus

I have at least three good friends who are OBSESSED (or so it seems) with DJings current golden boys, Chicago's Flosstradamus. Literally, if these three have the chance to see this duo in action, they WILL NOT skip a beat to be there. It's sort of like a cult-ish following although certainly a cult of awesome.

Flosstradamus recently did this amazing remix of "Yea Yeah" by every hip-er than-thou hipster's favorite act Matt and Kim which completely rocks and I think would be a perfect addition to the 4pm office dance party. In any event, it has certainly brightened my rainy day bluess so check it out, and go see Flosstradamus spin tonight at Hiro -- I know at least three people who are sure to be there!

interpol leaked (sort of)

If you know me, you'd know that, aside from the upcoming release of Zeitgeist by the Pumpkins, and possiibly a new Radiohead album that has been alluded to, I am MOST excited this year to get my hands on the third full-length album from Interpol. I love getting a new Interpol album -- it is this wonderful feeling of elation that only happens every few years but that brings with it this flood of emotions for me, knowing that I am listening to something that I will no doubt love and listen to until my ears can't take it anymore.

So far I haven't had the chance to see Interpol live this year, but this one track (which is a fairly good radio rip) has leaked. I'm liking it a lot -- it's still very upbeat and it seems like they are still progressing in a similiar yet still awesome direction coming off Antics (the same cannot be said for Carlos D's sense of style, unfortunately...).

Here it is.
