blogging is the new CMJ. djing is the same old nora.

Somehow this year it seems like every blogger is throwing some sort of CMJ showcase except for me. Seriously! Wouldn't it be a better idea to just have all the bloggers plan showcases and we wouldn't even need the CMJ part of the whole thing. Cut out the middle man. Hmm.

Anyways, I am participating in a way, by most likely crashing all my blogger friend's showcases, because they will probably let me get away with it and maybe (please) have some free sparks (get on that guys). Oh, and Chris from Battering Room decided that it would be a good idea to let me be one of the blogger (bloggette?) DJs for his CMJ pre-party. Haha silly Chris.

And I know it doesn't say this on the flier, but the first five people who show up get a sex on the beach on the house. Or a long island ice tea. Right Chris? Right-o.

bone down

last Friday i went to Webster Hall. some band called The Killers was playing. this was supposedly a "secret" but yeah fucking right. NEEDLESS TO SAY, the show was actually quite good, especially for a band that previously had always been kind of stiff as a live act in my opinion. I think the grand scale stage setup featuring a gianormous glowing "Sam's Town" sign and a pretty great lighting display to match really made a difference. So far from what I've heard, Sam's Town is a pretty over the top album and the theatrics of moustached Brandon and company are therefore pretty appropriate I guess.

I'm not really sure why, but this song stands out to me so I'm posting it (if Island Def Jam arrests me or something, Rachael said she would bail me out). Maybe it's just because hearing Brandon sing "I want to feel my bones on your bones, it's only natural" is kinda hot. Anyways, the track is pretty nutso.

The Killers - Bones

In other news, The Changes are the Spin.com band of the year. Or okay, band of the day.

And finally, come to this tonight. There will be bones on bones or something. Bah...

ps: no one had better show up wearing blue capri pants like the sim on the flier though.

keep smiling: friction party party one

I love going to Friction parties/shows, because you always know that no matter what is going on you are guranteed to see some great music and lately their line-ups have been getting better and better. Last week's show at sin-e was no exception, when I got to check out four bands that I hadn't had the chance to see before.

First up was Underrated's apparent favorite band ever ever (possibly *gasp* even more than Tally Hall), A Brief Smile. Lately the indie rock talent pool seems to be skewing younger and younger, and I have to say this band shows some definate potential. Lead by a serious Jason Schwartzman doppleganger, the five piece really seemed like they were genuinely enjoying themselves on stage, which is honestly really refreshing to see.

while some of their earlier material never really connected with me, the new songs from their forthcoming (Sept 27th) album R.E.S.T have developed their range quite a bit and it will be interesting to see where the future takes them.

A Brief Smile - This Machine

The next band to take the stage was the one I had heard the least about, but they also possibly stole the entire show. I have to admit that, while I didn't watch their entire set, Femme Generation from Toronto pretty much blew my mind -- though not so much musically as... theatrically? Honestly, at a certain point during a show when, as a member of the audience, you look down and see the lead singer of the band you were watching screaming into a microphone and practically humping your sneaker as he collapses to the floor... well that's just CRAZY okay. And it happened. And then confetti was flying through the air and at one point Jeff actually hid behind a chair or Jen or both to avoid being pelted in the head by flying random pieces of candy and streamers.

I can completely understand the Rapture comparisons (I mean the singer ALSO totally busted out a cowbell), but as far as live shows are concerned, Femme Generation took things to the next level of insanity.

Femme Generation - Heart In Stitches

More on the other two bands and a stuffed dog later...

go see this band

hi kids. so my lovely friend Sabrina is managing this band called The Silent Years from Detroit, who are coming all the way to NYC this weekend to play THREE (yes, THREE) shows! so I think you should be awesome and come support them/her. Apparently after their performance this year at SXSW, the band generated some great buzz on sites like Tripwire and are now kicking off a nationwide tour to support their self-titled debut(out October 24th).

Personally, I've had this album on repeat for days as I couldn't help but get drawn in to their well written dreamy rock songs.

Here are three of my favorties:

The Silent Years - No Secrets
The Silent Years - Someone To Keep Us Warm
The Silent Years - Take The Money Out

i'll tell everyone

So I know this is a tad bit belated, but I just made my afternoon lovelier by listening to The Changes podcast from their KEXP in studio. John and Cheryl described them as bubbly, which couldn't be more accurate if you've ever been a room with these four. Oh, and even THEY love their new album, Today Is Tonight (which, btw is NOW available on iTunes so you should really go buy it.. like NOW).

cuteness abounds

In even more mind blowing news, the band are gearing up for a tour, where they will share a stage with... TALLY HALL. A line up like this is possibly more than I could even handle. One of these joint shows will be The Changes album release party on October 20th at the Double Door in Chicago.

Thanks to Rachael for uploading this:

The Changes- LIVE on KEXP

In other and ENTIRELY unreleated news, today is apparently "Talk Like A Pirate Day" or something. Yaaaarrrr. And apparently because of this Jerry decided it would be fitting to post possibly the most frightening song EVER recorded. And Jerry, I love you, but I'm still not convinced that by "frightening" I mean "happy." Check it out.

embrace your inner sweater vest

So in reading online about NYC band The Ballet, this term "sissy pop band" has been getting thrown around a lot (I guess since the band actually uses this label to describe themselves). I'm not sure how I feel about the word sissy as a music descriptor, especially since the jingle-jangle rock pop that they play has always been really appealing to me, especially on my happier days. Then again, they are called The Ballet, something your older brother probably wouldn't cop to listening to unless he himself wears a lot of sweater vests (oh and btw does anyone else find their album cover and the cover for that band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's album -- you've heard of them, right? -- to be earily similiar looking?). Geeks of the world unite, trade in your Magnetic Fields albums and give this band a listen.

levy: "so hard," but they make it seem effortless

The other night I helped put on a show that didn't really work out well monitarily speaking (boo), but in all other repects I thought it was pretty great. The highlight for me was seeing one of my favorite and perhaps most underrated NYC bands, Levy, put on the best show I have seen from them yet. Singer/songwriter James has the lovelorn ballad thing down to a fine art, and not in a cheesy "your body is a wonderland" kind of way either. While "old" favorites like "Rotten Love" and their encore of "On The Dancefloor" where as wonderful as always, the standouts of their set for me were tracks from the album they are currently working on entitled "Glorious."

Here are two demos for you that I still cannot get out of my head:

Levy - So Hard

Levy - Squeeze

Big thanks to the Go Station, who also played possibly the best show I've seen from them also. The band recently signed a single deal to release the track "All Together Now," so congrats guys!

put your ass in a chair

okay hi. i used to update this blog a lot. i'm going to try to do that again, mostly because a) i have the time now and b) to stop people giving me a hard time about it. i write this stuff for them anyways, so I figure it's good to keep them happy. and i have actual free time, which is probably short lived and probably awesome. no it IS awesome.

for instance, i was a seat filler at the vmas last night. this was ridiculous, mostly just because it proved to me that MTV has pretty much zero relevance in my life. I had no idea what was going on, except that JT brought sexy back and the lovely babies that are panic! at the disco (i love them, i don't care what you say) won at the last minute, and that was awesome. but otherwise, it was basically a hip hop show, which you KNOW sucks when Jack White is relegated to being in the HOUSE BAND. What huh?

Anyways, so I'm going to try to write more, but first and foremost, I'm helping put on this show so you should probably be there:

OK then, more soon.
