new local music : the walkup

Aside from being friends of mine, the Walkup have been one one of my favorite local acts for some time now, showing a lot of promise over the past year and a half or so that i have been following them and checking them out live. so imagine my excitement when frontman Alex brandished their long awaited full length album while we were down at SXSW and placed it in my free hand (that one that wasn't holding a glass of spardka most likely).

Their newly updated sound is fresh and full of great hooks and an addictive sort of frantic energy. The two tracks below were the standouts to me, but every time I listen to this album it seems as though I discover something new and wonderful about it that I didn't notice before. And that to me, my friends, is the sign of a great record. Bands from NYC haven't been getting a lot of attention, love or really a whole lot of respect lately, but that is something that needs to change and perhaps that change will come here and now. It's about time!

people are talking about beat radio

come see this band. seriously. and at merc too! come experience some songwriting awesomeness. below you will find a new mp3 from the band, not included on their album.

Beat Radio - People Are Talking

Also, I just found this interview online with Beat Radio frontman and my favorite romantic Brian Sendrowitz. And it is, as expected, the cutest thing ever:

"I feel like I should tell you something embarrassing, like how Gilmore Girls made me cry recently. Okay that's quite enough I think. I guess I'm not very secretive."

Awww.. more revelations over here

more tacos, more awesome

Okay where were we. Ah yes, SXSW. Right now I'd like to highlight two more bands that I enjoyed while I was in Tejas. After we "accidently" saw Hot Club De Paris, a group of us hiked (it was far, ok) to La Zona Rosa for the "Free Yer Radio" party which involved a lot of free food, including franks and beans (!!!) and booze and an amazing live show with The Rapture and one of my new favorite groups, The Pipettes. When this retro 60's girl group took the stage, my rock and roll guys friends all almost instantly declared their crushes on at least one if not all of the members. Their music is fun, their outfits adorably coordinated and their choreography ties the whole thing together into one brilliant and fun to watch package.

Here are some Pipettes tunes and make sure you go and listen to the new BLOG SHOW today because they are the first band that we feature in our SXSW wrap up.

The Pipettes - Pull Shapes

The Pipettes - Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me

Of course, it goes without saying that The Rapture were AMAZING. Hearing "House Of Jealous Lovers" live always leaves me totally beside myself with happiness, and after their "tease" of a show at Studio B (only 3 songs), having them play a LONG full set was a treat to say the least.

Another band that I discovered my love for while in Austin have obviously been around for a while. I'm not sure why I'm just paying attention to Kings Of Leon now, but on the drive from Houston to Austin my friend Aishah had a promo copy of Because Of The Times that we played in the car a few times over. It wasn't until I caught them Friday at the Spin party, however, that I really was won over by these dirty southern rockers.

Check out the tracks below - "On Call" has been burning a hole in my ipod all week long. Great stuff. Great like the cheese fries at Stubbs. I mean YUM, okay.

Kings Of Leon - On Call

Kings Of Leon - Charmer

More updates coming...

sxsw 2007: margarita memory loss/awesomeness

Phew, so I am back from SXSW and all I can say is "thank god that's over" and "when can i do that again????" What a crazy experience, I swear if I didn't have a camera I wouldn't really be able to piece together most of it. SXSW is exhausting. I mean, I live in a "walking city" and my feet were still DYING by the end of every night, despite my trying to drown myself in free margaritas to numb the pain. I'm going to attempt to recap some of what I saw over the next few weeks/days. But let me first say that I don't want to see a taco again for a loooong time.

The first day I got to Austin I basically dropped off my friends at the convention center to get their swanky badges and hauled ass over to Emo's where the Metro party was going on with a lot of my favorite hometown bands on the bill. I walked in just as the Changes were about to go on, and yelled out something to their singer Darren who spotted me in the crowd and made me come hold his hand briefly before they launched into their set.

For all the MANY MANY MANY times that I have seen this band (the first time was actually almost TWO years ago!), they never fail to blow me away. The band has been on the road with acts like Tally Hall, Dios Malos and Spinto Band and the constant touring has really paid off for them as far as their live shows are concerned -- they are tighter and more polished than ever. Darren was more confident as a frontman than I have ever seen him before, dedicating songs to the venue bartenders who gave him whiskey and encouraging the crowd to move closer (and they did). They actually played a song I've never even heard before, and I will have to ask them about it tonight at their show at Pianos as they kick off the second leg of their US tour.

Here are the dates, and my little sister will probably be at the Canopy Club show so go say hi to her.

CHANGES TOUR DATES:

East coast tour with The Colour
3.20.07 - Pianos - New York, NY
3.21.07 - Union Hall - Brooklyn, NY
3.22.07 - Northstar - Philadelphia, PA
3.23.07 - Lizard Lounge - Lancaster, PA
3.24.07 - Recher Theatre - Baltimore, MD
3.26.07 - Casbah at Tremont - Charlotte, NC
3.27.07 - Ground Zero - Spartanburg, SC
3.28.07 - Front Street Music Hall - Wilmington, NC
3.29.07 - Village Tavern - Charleston, SC
and then in the midwest...
3.31.07 - Alchemize - Cincinnati, OH
4.5.07 - M-Shop - Ames, IA
4.6.07 - Mojo's - Columbia, MO
4.7.07 - Canopy Club - Urbana, IL

The Changes - On A String

After the Changes and a quick pop into the Austinist BBQ to talk "blog" shop with Dodge and Chris, the Gostation took me to the Fader Fort where I drank some wacky soco drink with Rachael and we saw this band called Hot Club de Paris that was Central Village's favorite discovery apparently. I liked them a lot too. Sounded a lot like Futureheads. And seriously, look. They have songs called stuff like this:

Hot Club De Paris - Sometimesitsbetternottostickbitsofeachotherin
eachotherforeachother

I mean.. WHAT?

Yep. Okay I have some work to do but more coming later.

irockiroll's fairly half-assed but awesome SXSW preview

It's going to be almost 70 degrees in New York tomorrow according to my Yahoo! weather. It will probably be 10 degrees warmer than that at least when I arrive in Austin tomorrow. Considering both of these things, isn't it fitting that my new favorite band of the moment are called Winterkids?

No matter, because I am totally in love with the sound of this band, which reminds me a lot of well.. EVERYTHING that has been coming out of the UK lately, but still somehow manages to sound totally fresh and awesome (comparisons have been made to bands like Pulp, the Winter Present and... Blink 182 - tho not sure about that last one). I will be missing their show tonight because there is NO WAY I am going to haul ass to a concert before I leave for a vacation where I will see 283975298375293857235 concerts most likely.

Winterkids have an album out right now called Memoirs and I feature them on the BLOG SHOW this week so if you like what you hear make sure to tune in!

If you want to catch them at Merc or down in the heat, here is where you can find the band this week:

Tues 3/13 @ 7:30pm 21+
Mercury Lounge -
Live From London with The Holloways, Pop Levi, and Tunng

SXSW schedule:
Wednesday 3/14 - Levi’s/Fader Party @ The Fort, 3pm
Thursday 3/15 – Village Voice Party @ The Blind Pig, 8pm
Friday 3/16 – SESAC Day Stage @ Austin Convention Center, 1pm
Friday 3/16 – Pangea Party @ Barcelona, 9:30pm
Friday 3/16 – Official SXSW showcase @ Whiskey Bar, 8pm
Saturday 3/17 – The Musebox Presents Bubbling Up @ Habana Annex, 1:20pm

Winterkids - Tape It

Winterkids - All The Money

The other new band that has totally grabbed my attention in the past week has been Air Traffic after I read about them on Exifare. This band, also from the UK (!) play some incredibly catchy piano rock and have a new album coming out on EMI. Here are their SXSW shows that I will HOPEFULLY make it to unless I am in too much of a margarita enduced haze.

Mar 15 2007 - SXSW - HELL YA! - Apple Street Bar Austin

Mar 15 2007 11:30P SXSW - The Rio Austin, Texas

Mar 16 2007 SXSW - BD Riely's (Music From Ireland Full Irish Breakfast Party Austin)

Air Traffic - Just Abuse Me

Air Traffic - Never Even Told Me Her Name

Ok well those are the two recommendations that I'm throwing into the hat, and now I am off to be completely crazed until I get on the plane at 6:30 this morning.

See you down south!

virgins and birthdays

I keep meaning to talk about the Virgins on this blog, especially since I think every other word out of my friend Piper's mouth lately has been something about this band. They played a residency at Pianos and I totally suck and missed every show. BUT I have been digging their music for a while now, and they are going to be touring around the country with Jet for a couple of months, including an April 5th stop at Webster Hall.

Ideally I still want to see them rock out at a smaller venue and you probably do too, but this is def. a band to keep on your radar. And look how cute they are covered with candy! Awwww. Also, this song rocks.

The Virgins - Rich Girls

Speaking of sweet things, I'm having a birthday party this Friday, because that is my birthday. I mention this mostly because my friend Carolyn designed this AWESOME invitation for me, and she also does (usually for free I believe or a totally reasonable fee) fliers for bands and parties. SO if you are a band, and you are lacking in the photoshop skills department, I HIGHLY recommend you send Carolyn an email at redhead@redheadcanvas.com. She is the nicest girl ever and has a FAST turn-around time too.

And, as I mentioned, here is my birthday flier. There are no bands playing as there were in previous years, but the music will be awesome. And there will be cupcakes and cheap alcohol. It's not a private party or anything, because I'm having that seperately, so feel free to stop by if you want.

because i'm........ yeah.

Oh good lord. Here we go. I'm blogging about a song, and the song is called this:

The Dollyrots - Because I'm Awesome

YEAH SERIOUSLY. BECAUSE I AM FUCKING AWESOME!!!

Someone (thank you!) emailed this to me this morning, who found it via Heartonastick, who has a much more in depth take on it than I am going to attempt here. But if you ever liked bands like Letters to Cleo, or if you maybe secretly like Ashlee Simpson songs (an exboyfriend of mine LOVES the song "La La", no joke) but really do NOT like Ashlee Simpson just out of principle, then I think this song is for you. Or hell, if you're just plain awesome and want to tell your co-workers and roommates about it via musical example.

I'd probably dance around my bedroom to this in my underwear. But um... I did not tell you that. I sent this to Rachael and now she's digging through her CD to collection for her Josie and the Pussycats Soundtrack. There you have it. Grrrrrrrrl power and stuff.

Happy tuesday.

this is about how our song came on, and we sang along

As someone who djs on a fairly regular basis, and oftentimes to a crowd of people who come to the bar i work at via a bridge or a tunnel, I do have more than a few "guilty pleasure" songs in my collection. The thing is, I don't really feel guilty about this at all. I love cheesy music and pop culture. I've danced around my room to Fall Out Boy (and to the Arcade Fire after that). Judge me for that if you will, but I think all music has a certain time and a place in my life where it can be appreciated for what it is.

That being said, I can't get this song out of my head. It's pretty fluff and very very very 80s, but it has a good hook and I just plain LIKE it.

Umbrellas - Again and Again

I don't really know much about this band either, since this CD randomly landed on my desk in a pile to be reviewed for my job. They are called Umbrellas and have an album called Illuminare out with Militia Group. And they are from a town called Norman, Oklahoma! Anyways, here is another song from them that is a different sort of thing from "Again and Again" all together. Much more lush and dramatic, so depending on your mood (dance party or possible pity party), you have two songs to choose from.

Umbrellas - Ships

sxsw = overwhelming

i think last friday alone i rsvped to some 20+ parties featuring tons of great bands, free food and booze. how is a girl expected to keep this all straight?

i was talking to rachael this morning about it and gave her a list of the four acts (as of right now) that i really want to see down in texas. most of the reasoning involved in this is that they are bands that i either recently MISSED in new york or don't have tickets to see in the near future OR they aren't a band who will be playing in NYC soon after sxsw that i can catch at a later/less crazed time.

or the band is tally hall.

so the list so far goes:
tally hall
peter bjorn and john
amy winehouse
the fratellis
the oohlas (see i alerady added one!)

OBVIOUSLY this is not a complete list, due to my being overwhelmed, and i'm sure i will see lots more bands than those four but those are my MUST see or BE SUPER SAD list.

that said, if there is a band that you REALLY think i should check out, after taking into account the other bands that i like, please let me know!!!

and tell me when they are playing and what i need to do to get in. and i will go and write about them.

sending me mp3s also really helps!

email me here

you rock.

guess i don't watch enough television

Despite my general dislike for all things Studio B, I suggest that if you missed the Teddybear show last night and you like fun, then this is where you should go:

Also, Skybox are playing at Cake Shop at 10pm. It will be awesome, I will be there. We can have a cup cake together after!

Like Hot Hot Heat or bands like them? Head over to Pianos tonight for an early show (7pm) featuring The Photo Atlas who are signed to Stolen Transmission. It may or may not be free, but it's worth the chance anyways.

The Photo Atlas - Handshake Heart Attack

And finally, blog readers are awesome. So now, once again, have a nice weekend. I love this song so much.

a week of blogging in one entry. woo!

This week has been kind of boring, but the weeks leading up to it were anything but. I gotta say though, I'm happy that february is OVER. it is one yucky month. and now the sun is shining and the birds are defrosting and all is well. yada yada yada.

last night my friend Jason took me to go see Rob Dickinson who was in the Catherine Wheel. Rob was pretty awesome, and has a great voice and a lot of groupies. He played this one song that was totally amazing called "Delicious" and I can't find an mp3 of it anywhere. Someone SEND IT TO ME.

in the meantime, listen to this other Catherine Wheel song, which I am also enjoying.

Catherine Wheel - Crank

After the show, I drunkenly played some skeeball in Greenpoint. Skeeball = best. G train = WORST.

Tonight I am SUPER excited, because I finally get to see Mason Proper, a band that I really love and have been dying to catch live. They are playing at the soon-to-be-defunct sin-e. They play at 8pm, with A Brief Smile and Project Jenny, Project Jan.

# = w/ Birdmonster (YAY FOR BIRDMONSTER!!!)

Mason Proper - My My (Bad Fruit)

Mason Proper - Miss Marylou Carreau

Mason Proper - 100 Years

We also played them on the BLOG SHOW a week or two ago. Good stuff. ALSO there is a new blog show today where we feature:

Kaiser Chiefs (THREE NEW SONGS OMG)

Click here to go and listen.

Finally, as a sort of preview for next week's blog show, and because Jason works with this band and got me all excited telling me they will be down in Austin for SXSW, here are some hot songs from the Cinematics.

HAPPY WEEKEND!

Cinematics - Keep Forgetting

Cinematics - Rise & Fall

oohla la la la

hi my name is nora, and i like the oohlas.

there, i said it. not that it's a bad thing anyways, and actually far from bad, their album Best Stop Pop, which landed on my desk this morning, is GOOD. quite good! like early/mid 90s good. It reminds me a lot of Veruca Salt i think, but less grrrrl and more pretty and well crafted songs. If that makes any sense. Obviously, since I know Sarah, I've been hearing oodles of oohlas praise for months and months now, but I'm really kicking myself for never paying enough attention to this band. check them out
