2006/02/23a slight buzz"Last night solidified two things: I hate Fat Baby, and Nora has good taste in music." I love Rachael. Almost as much as I love Liam and Me. posted by n. @ 2/23/2006

Anyways.... this weekend I was sick. I watched a lot of bad/good stuff on cable tv. I saw one good movie (The Squid and the Whale) and one bad movie, save for fleeting moments of Scott Speedman topless (Underworld 2). Then Sunday I rallied and went to Motherfucker with Craig and saw the New York Dolls, which was actually 110% awesome. Can I just say that I also actually really love Avalon? Not for clubbing of course, but for fun stuff/events like this? That place is crazy, and certain rooms totally make me feel like I'm in Willy Wonka's house minus the oompa loompas, but throw in some drag queens. I saw Kylie Minogue there once and it was fucking ridiculous. So yeah, good Motherfucker! The DJ played this Art Brut song, which was a stroke of genius if you ask me, and people went ape shit. Art Brut - Good Weekend And it WAS a good weekend. Sometime soon I'll write about the good (and mostly not so good) bands that I've seen lately, but my job has kind of started to make it difficult to write about new music. But don't worry (Rob) you haven't "lost me" yet. Oh and I'm apparently going to appear on some crazy Japanese TV show. In it I'm drinking beer and playing Liam and Me (this is my reality... uh i guess). They are playing at Fat Baby tonight and you should probably go. 11pm. BTW, Crackers United still have the best fliers and the best shows ever. See here. Tired now. Need more tea. Have a good Wednesday! posted by n. @ 2/22/2006
2006/02/14that's hotLollapalooza back in '06. No... I mean LITERALLY it's hot. Chicago should really only have outdoor festivals in September and October. But you know I'll most likely go anyways! posted by n. @ 2/14/2006

2006/02/10the easy lifeWhat a busy week this has been -- and we're on the brink of a blizzard apparently so my trip to Atlantic City this Saturday for some emo goodness may have to sadly be postponed. The GOOD thing that could come out of this is that I would be able to go see the Gaskets tear shit up (oh yesss) at Arlene's Grocery saturday night. The Gaskets are basically like two guys with ADD who ate a bunch of pop rocks, drank a six pack of Sparks, got a sound machine and decided to put on a fucking awesome dance show. Clearly this must be seen to be believed (I've seen it, and I loved it)! Jerry is so excited about this show that he WROTE A SKIT ABOUT IT and will certainly be front and center throwing his hands in the air (like he just don't care.... i love you Jerry). The Gaskets - The Easy Life Spent last night having a blast and a half with the guys of my new favorite thing on the planet, the band Liam and Me. They are playing next week at my least favorite NYC venue, but we are planning to bring them back to NYC soon-ish so get excited! Jay Goodtimes is DJing tomorrow night at Fontanas (aka FUNtanas) and his name doesn't mislead -- hell he's promising "a tits out kind of rager" and something else involving "mad robotic sexy taco." I'm not QUITE sure about that but just don't ask him to play the Killers because he'll look at you like you have 20 heads or something. I love Jay too. Head over after The Gaskets show. DETAILS: Saturday, Feb 11 (9:30pm) @ Fontana's (FREE) 105 Eldridge (btwn Grand and Broome) Next week I'm actually having a party! So tell your Valentine's "date" to fuck off (though not via text message because that is just rude) and come to The Skinny on Tuesday. Sexy tacos may infact be involved with this also, cupcakes are gurantee. Details TBA! And finally for Friday, new LEVY tune here... it's sad and beautiful. And that's the kind of day today is in a lot of ways, so here you go: Levy - Rector Street posted by n. @ 2/10/2006
2006/02/07keeping it local (well almost)
Ok I have to admit the severed groundhog kinda gives me the heebie jeebies, but otherwise this seems like a cool show that you should go to. The Crackers United guys never disappoint. I had a crazy weekend, witnessed three fights at Orchard bar in one night, and DJed at the Skinny the next night which is always a blast. Seriously, I don't know what I would do without that bar and the people who work there -- and they have JENGA. Forreals. And then Sunday I hooked Laura up with my Jenny Lewis ticket and caught some much needed Z's instead. I love Jenny, don't get me wrong, but I was tired. Good thing is, Laura wrote a great review and used her fantastic camera to snap some amazing photos. I have camera envy. Anyways... Some shows featuring great local talent that you should check out this week include: the iOs @ Rothko on Thursday. later this month they will kick off a Pianos residency and are planning to release their full length album entitled "In Sunday Songs" on May 2nd on the fantastic Kanine label. To perhaps help illuminate how cute and awesome this band is, check out their Crashin-in interview... with singer Autumn's cat Squalkers. I think maybe if I'm ever interviewed for anything I should just let Zoe do the talking for me. Stream four songs on their Myspace. also our "old" favorites (which is weird to say, but I haven't talked about them in a while) Benzos are playing a special acoustic show at Pianos at 8pm Thursday and it's FREE! If I had actually bothered to make a top 10 or 20 list of my favorite albums from last year I think their record Morning Stanzas would def. be on it. Benzos - Glass Souls And I should have probably mentioned this a million years ago, but The Changes (finally!) signed to indie label Drama Club. Back in college I knew a few people who could have started their own drama clubs (if you know what I mean)... but seriously, congrats to the band and we should have a full length album to dance around too very very soon. posted by n. @ 2/07/2006
2006/02/03the skinny this saturday... i'm djing with jenny lewis!okay.. actually just me. 174 orchard between stanton and houston this saturday @ the skinny 10-4 or 5 am cheap drinks fun tunes etc. etc. come hang out with me oh and i went to the Plug awards last night and left after about half an hour or so and had no idea what was going on while I was there so I have nothing that exciting to report. (Brooklyn Vegan has covered like every five seconds of what went on there today if you're curious -- that's why he was nominated and I was not obviously! It's too bad that he lost to Myspace, though Myspace IS taking over the world, kind of like Pinky and the Brain....okay what was I even talking about...) My apologies to the lovely person who put me on the guest list... Here's what was in the gift bags as reported to me by Shawn who stuck around: Shawn: a whole box of emergen-c Nora: ew Shawn: umm Shawn: some vinyl Shawn: some magazine about silkscreening Shawn: sub pop sampler Shawn: myspace hat Shawn: some other samplers Shawn: living things Shawn: sampler Shawn: some other stuff Shawn: it was really all about the giant box of emergen-c (thrilling huh?) My boss is going to the Grammy Awards next week and I'm pretty sure the gift bags for that will be way more exciting I also ran into the band Modernage last night and encourage you to come to their show @ Pianos tonight. 10:30. And finally, my girl Melissa says the Smashing Pumpkins reunion is ON. Possibly for Lollapalooza if that even happens this year. Thanks to my future husband Rob Holmes for this info... posted by n. @ 2/03/2006
2006/02/02i'll be as gentle on you as baby shampooOkay... since I don't really know what to talk about this week and I haven't been into either of the last two bands I saw enough to write indepth entries about them... let me pose a question here. When I was home in Chicago for the holidays, Q101 did this "13 years in 13 days" thing where they played the top 101 songs for every year starting when the station launched in 1993. Obviously this was crazy awesome for the nostalgia factor (until you got to the late 90s and things really started to suck... you know, when Sugar Ray had the number one song in whatever year... depressing). Anyways, there was this one song back in the 90s that was a HUGE radio hit (at least in Chicago) called "Tangerine Speedo" by the band Caviar. It was a ridiculous song... about a tangerine colored swimsuit I guess, and yet everyone in Chicago seemed to fucking love it. And I never would have remembered it if not for the "13 years in 13 days thing" and now I have subjected my intern to it for the past three or four hours. Caviar - Tangerine Speedo Anyone else remember this song? posted by n. @ 2/02/2006
