Tweet posted by n. @ 4/27/2006 | | # 2006/04/26 revisiting old friends Saturday night I experienced my first Tiswas at The Annex (which was REALLY fun, so much that we left and came back again because everywhere else was lacking - and is it just me or does the newly finished basement make you feel like you're inside a boat?), which also marked my reunion with a band I have loved ever since they were called another name. Every time I see Saints and Lovers my mind is spontaneously blown and this was absolutely no exception. I'm not sure how nearly a year went by since I last saw them, but I certainly won't be letting that happen again. The time the band have been spending in the studio clearly has paid off considering their set of what seemed like almost entirely new songs. Saints + Lovers - Like It Was Yesterday Last night at their Boston show with Snowden, Rob from Morning Theft picked up a copy of the band's new album, entitled Anti-Anti and imd me this morning to rave about it. I can't wait to hear it. Lucky for me, the band are in town for two shows, one tonight at Arlene's Grocery at 10pm and then tomorrow at Southpaw. Snowden - China Light Tweet posted by n. @ 4/26/2006 | | # 2006/04/25 i'm knocking at your door back in mid-march i made the annual trek to good ol' austin, tx for sxsw (along with most of nyc, or so it seemed). nora had to stay behind to work or some crap, so i tried to cheer her up with grand promises of daily updates, photos, gossip and the like. of course, i was too deaf, drunk, tired and/or nonplussed to ever actually follow through on any of that DURING the conference. then once i got home, i read review after review on every blog under the sun and felt inundated with 'memories' and highlights that were barely 24 hours old. i got utterly sick and tired of sxsw recapping and just gave up on the whole she-bang (yes, i said SHE-BANG). but today, over a month later, i'm still listening to a band that made my sxsw experience extra special this year, so i guess now is as good of a time as any to tell y'all about them. they are called AUTO ESCAPE, and i can't sing their praises enough! they are a 4-piece indie outfit hailing from a little town in texas called mckinney. their lineup includes a pair of super cute (which is apparently criteria for being mentioned in this blog lately) brothers on drums and vocals/guitar, and two other very talented, young and equally adorable boys on bass and guitar. these guys sound fantastic. hopefully we will get a taste of them in nyc soon. but until then, here are my 2 favorite tracks from their ep, take a listen and let me know what you think: white roses - AUTO ESCAPE (this song is great, but you have to wait for it to 'hit'- takes a little over a minute so give it a chance) falling asleep in the snow - AUTO EXPRESS okay then, i'm off to eat pizza with goons... mmmmmm. xo nic Tweet posted by Anonymous @ 4/25/2006 | | # 2006/04/24 first axl rose at misshapes and now this? happy monday. someone IMd me this morning and sent me these Alice In Chains tour dates. Rob from I Rock I Roll favorites The Changes (from Chicago) thrilled me today by sending me this clip from NME where Ross from the Futureheads namedrops them and then some as one of his favorite bands that he's listening to now. How effing cool is that? The band is currently in the studio finishing up their album, which features a LOT of new tracks including "Water of the Gods," "Sisters" and "House of Style," which apparently in honor of designer Tod Oldham whom they met at Sundance earlier this year, how fancy! As Rob told me, "he liked that song cause he heard Dave playing it for Darren before our show during soundcheck." First the bloggers, then the designers, then the industry, then um.. celebrities and then the world? Right? right. Here's what the NME thang looked like: Jeff gave me a brownie at lunch and it has made me entire day exponentially better. Jeff, therefore, rules. Also while I'm here, I forgot to mention that a week or two ago I saw the Cinematics at Rothko and COMPLETELY love and adored them. I'm not sure why they aren't huge, but I think they should be. Though they don't come across quite as well on their album I suppose. Their lead singer is entirely adorable and has the most wonderful accent ever. I just wanted to smoosh him. And while I swear I'm not hanging out around NYU dorms (anymore), as someone who works in the music industry it just seems like everyone gets totally worked up and excited about how YOUNG someone is, especially if they are talented. The other day I got to check out a showcase for Paolo Nutini, who is basically a younger (read: 18 years old) Julian Casablancas clone from the UK who has a pretty amazingly soulful voice. Some people call him the next James Blunt, which can mean a variety of things but I just think he's talented. And if you know me, you know that singer songwriters are typically not my thing (unlike guys under the legal drinking age apparently), so this means a lot. I don't think his recorded songs do him justice, but this one is my favorite so check it out. Paolo Nutini - Jenny Don't Be Hasty At the very least, I think he could kick Teddy Geiger's ass (even though I sort of want to make out with Teddy Geiger for some reason. ho hum). Tweet posted by n. @ 4/13/2006 | | # stellar stars. There is a heatwave outside, so I'm going to sit here in the AC and write a blog entry. A while ago, I went to the Cornerstone offices for some party involving free sparks, and after drinking um... a six pack or two, took a train downtown and decided to make good use of all the free stellastarr* schwag that I "borrowed" off of someone's desk. See above. This is probably illegal, in which case I'm making up this entire story obviously, but the reason for this is that I really love stellastarr* and I always have. Or at least I've always loved their first album and think that they are awesome people. That's probably more accurate. So what seems like a million years ago (or two weeks ago), I went to see them at Bowery Ballroom. I didn't really have high expectations for the show, or any expectations at all really. The last time I saw them, they were the Ligers and played only songs from the new album for the first time live, ever. I wasn't totally excited with that, and then Harmonies for the Haunted never really grew on me. A friend of mine saw them in London recently and he wasn't terribly impressed either and for a little while I was worried that this band was on their way out. That monday at Bowery I was happy to find myself proven entirely wrong. This show was fantastic. FANTASTIC. I don't know if someone gave the band a much needed pep talk or if they were inspired by an enthusiastic hometown crowd or WHAT, but it was awesome. And the mixing of their old songs with the new made me love gems like "Homeland" and "Jenny" even more, and actually made me fall in love with songs from Harmones that I had never been able to like before, like "The Diver." Amazing. Just to prove that this wasn't a fluke, I went to see them open for Editors the next night at Warsaw and it was just more awesomeness of the same. I know this band isn't for everyone (anything that is is boring anyways, as Jeff told me at dinner last night), but I really hope that people give them a chance if they haven't already. In other news, I still LOVE Editors and think they are one of my top live bands ever. Their lead singer is the new Chris Martin. That's a bold statement, perhaps, but one performance of "Camera" live and you might just agree with me.
