2008/03/18WOMBATS! FTW!Last night I went over to Annex with my friend Dmitri to see a band that I have been dying to check out since I got a copy of their album, but missed completely at SXSW due to either scheduling conflicts or tequila or some sort of combination of the two. The venue was COMPLETELY packed when we got there, and somehow they squished in even MORE people by the time the Wombats took the stage. But what a lucky group of people we were, because the band from Liverpool tore thru pretty much every track from their debut album with an energy that resulted in an eventual MOSH pit, the kind of which I have never seen at Annex (and that I rarely really see at NYC shows period). Granted, a good majority of the crowd was made up of UK transplants/tourists and a few smitten early industry insiders and label people, but it was electric nonetheless. The Wombats kind of ARE like Christmas come early, and they brought the dance party along with them. The band have no additional dates in the US as of righ tnow, but hopefully will be back in the summer after their extensive europe tour. death cab for cutie possess my heart. again. forreals.
When I was down in austin, I went to visit some old coworkers and favorite bands at the Chop Shop/Atlantic Records showcase (oh hai Tally Hall), and while I was there I heard what had already been repeated to me ad nauseum. "The new Death Cab For Cutie album is AMAZING." I used to be a really huge DCFC fan. Transatlanticism was my "jam," so to speak. The first time I heard it played in its entirety I was making out with a boy in the back seat of a car and I made him stop kissing me just so I could pay more attention to the album, that's how good it was. It is brilliant and the title track makes me weep like a baby. I gave that album out as gifts to my younger sister and her friends and told them that they MUST hear it. Then I worked at Atlantic around when they got signed, and then Plans came out, which was like... good cred for the label but kind of so-so hum-de-dum as far as an album goes, and was like NOTHING in comparison to Transatlanticism. So in May the band is releasing their second major label album, entitled Narrow Stairs. And it is reported to be, like I said, AMAZING. And let me just say that if this first single is any indication, I am going to be completely in love with this record. I mean, FOR ONE THING, THE FIRST SINGLE IS OVER 8 MINUTES LONG!?!?!?! When was the last time a major label let something like that happen? Love. It. Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart posted by n. @ 3/18/2008

2008/03/07new tracks from old favoriteswhat is old is new again? well something like that. the following three bands have all been blogged about here before. partially because i have huge crushes on their lead singers, but mostly because they are just awesome bands in my opinion. and they all have new songs (and in the case of the first two, they have new albums! fab). i have seen we are scientists approx 83957289357289375 times live, because it is one of my favorite things to do. ever. i have so much fun at their shows, mostly because i love geeks that rock and that is their whole schtick. Their album, titled Brain Thrust Mastery (that name beat out other options such as: "What # of $ Do That Cost?", "Fluffin' Tha Cushions", "Onlookerswatchedinhorror", "Mermaid Stewwwww", "Do Smoke Detectors Detect The Smell Of Smoke?", "YOU ASKED YOU FIND OUT fu*k UP SECRET", "Collective Soul", "DJ Server Wars" and "You Bang, She Bangs, You Want Some...Unh!") is coming out March 17th. Soooo... I wish I could say that I am totally in love with this disc, but so far... I'm kinda bummed about it honestly. I don't know what is going on, but the whole thing so far has just bored me! How is that even possible??? Is it because their drummer left the band last November? DId they run out of kittens to play with? Where has all the geek magic gone? Please make it better, I am hurting over here!!! sigh. Here is a track for you. I picked this one because I have seen them play it live and therefore it actually stuck out to me. It is also appropriately titled because I was REALLY impatient for this album, and now blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. We Are Scientists - Impatience French Kicks have a new album coming out called Swimming, which will be released on April 1st on Vagrant Records. I was going to make an april fools joke there, but i just couldn't think of anything clever enough. Anyways, the band produced and mixed the record themselves, and lead singer (and super hottie) Nick Stumpf says that Swimming is "by far the closest we've come to getting the sound we wanted.” Sounds good enough to me! Catch them on these tour dates, and give a listen to one of the new tracks below french kicks tour dates are so super 4/1 New York, NY Mercury Lounge 4/4 Boston, MA Middle East 4/5 Philadelphia, PA Johnny Brenda's 4/8 New York, NY Mercury Lounge 4/15 New York, NY Mercury Lounge 4/24 Washington DC Rock N Roll Hotel 4/25 Chapel Hill, NC Local 506 4/26 Atlanta, GA The Earl 4/27 Asheville, NC Bald Eagle 5/15 Portland, OR Doug Fir 5/16 Seattle, WA Chop Suey 5/18 San Francisco, CA The Independent 5/19 Sacramento, CA Blue Lamp 5/22 Los Angeles, CA The Echo 5/23 San Diego, CA Casbah French Kicks - Abandon Finally, Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly released this sweet cover of Justice's D.A.N.C.E.
