2008/06/19art + booze + bands = sweeeeeetness. sigur ros @ moma etc.
when you combine three great things into one, generally the result tends to be pretty fucking fantastic. a good example of this is the special Sigur Ros concert that happened at MOMA on Tuesday night. my friend Chris was lucky enough to somehow score tickets (I NEVER manage to get tickets to anything because i am a broke ass procrastinator!) and he took me along. there was free vodka/ginger ale and free grolsch beer (which i like pretty much 99% because of the bottle alone). there were art installations by Olafur Eliasson called Take Your Time. Since the doors opened at 7 and the band went on at 9 we basically did just that and roamed around the various light-centric exhibits, which were neato - although the security guards were REALLY grumpy and got pissy with me for touching the moss wall! what is the point of having a wall made of moss if you can't TOUCH it. well, actually, the point apparently was that you were supposed to smell it! it was stinky. Eliasson is the same guy who is doing the crazy man made waterfalls in the east river, btw. I had never seen Sigur Ros before and really couldn't call myself a huge fan - but it was nearly impossible to not get completely wrapped up in them on Tuesday night. The band played for nearly 2 hours and their lush sound was the perfect accompaniment to the environment of MOMA and Eliasson's equally soothing installations. Beev has more photos and a set list over here. Sigur Ros - Gobbledigook Another example of how three awesome things can combine into one even MORE awesome thing is this new track by N.E.R.D which features Santogold (what doesn't feature Santogold lately? the girl is EVERYWHERE! i heart her) and Strokes hottie mcfrontman Julian Casablancas. and it is seriously THE BEST THING EVER. it could rule the world (possibly sharing duties with Chris Martin?). well... maybe not quite, but i have had it on repeat all. day. long. N.E.R.D - My Drive Thru ft. Santogold & Julian Casablancas Yay. posted by n. @ 6/19/2008
2008/06/134 pretty songs i chose cause iluwell, i probably don't even know you, but ilu for still even reading my blog! hahaa... Unless you are living under some sort of gianormous rock or instinctively tune out ipod commercials like it's your job, you know that Coldplay have a new album out and people are blogging the SHIT out of it. but really, i shouldn't say "shit," because everything I've heard (except... the single, actually?) i have actually really liked. but this song, Strawberry Swing, in particular i loved when i first heard it. it's just very simple and lovely, something you'd expect from someone who has children named after fruits and biblical characters, no? Coldplay - Strawberry Swing I have seriously been procrastinating writing about the Acorn for OVER A MONTH now, after I caught this Ottawa band play a great intimate set at Sound Fix records. They actually played four back to back shows during their NYC visit, including a Brooklyn Vegan party, in promotion of their new album Glory Hope Mountain. They make folk rock that people like me (who worships the Smashing Pumpkins if that is a good example) can totally fall head over heels for. I will say that I prefer their spirited live performance to their recordings, but they have a LOT of ukeleles! Fun! This track is actually from their EP, but it's one of my faves The Acorn - Crooked Legs OMG FLEET FOXES. YES, I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT FLEET FOXES. But seriously... if people are blogging the shit out of the new Coldplay album, then I'm not really even sure HOW to describe the blog-o-frenzy that is brewing for this band. Fleet Foxes are five guys who are from Seattle who make nice music together. Their debut self-titled album has been released on Sub Pop, who put out lots of nice music, and the singer's brother wrote this really sweet bio about them. And they aren't too hippie-dippie folk for me either. Wow, this review of mine is really sucking, but you've read about this band so much it doesn't really matter, right? Anyways, so far this is my favorite Fleet Foxes song, enjoy! Oh, and their NYC shows already sold out, so sucks to be you (and me also... boo). Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood And FINALLY, I am super stoked because EARLIMART are already putting out a new album! Holy potatoes! Didn't Mentor Tormentor come out like... yesterday? No matter, I love Earlimart and this track doesn't disappoint (although it's not mind blowingly different from anything else they have put out, so maybe that's not SO good... but not so bad either). Hymn and Her will be out on Majordomo on July 1st! Sahweet. Earlimart - Song For I wonder who the song is for? They don't say. Ha! Have a nice weekend! posted by n. @ 6/13/2008
2008/06/12After The Jump Fest - Band Lineup!
I know it's kind of hard to read, but if you click it and enlarge it it should work. I'm really excited about the line-up this year, mostly because I haven't seen a lot of the bands playing yet myself! There are, of course, some favorites of mine like Wakey Wakey!, Pela, Bridges and Powerlines and The Antlers that I will be highlighting over the next week, but I think it's a well rounded line up with something for everyone. The best part is that the daytime portion is MASSIVE and it's TOTALLY FREE. And I love massively totally free things and I have a feeling you might also. Check out After The Jump Fest.com for more info - there is also a RAFFLE with some sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet prizes. posted by n. @ 6/12/2008
