2010/03/31Levis/Fader Fort SXSW 2010 - more like a hipster colony
Seriously, it's true. Since I didn't go to SXSW last year, this year was my first experience attending the Levis/Fader Fort in its new suped-up location. The entire affair has turned into quite an operation in the past few years, with long queues to pick up coveted wristbands and much (annoying) line-up teasing via Twitter. This year I made it to the Fort three times and found it to be basically like Disney's Main Street USA for the hipster set. Everyone looked cool, Soco flowed freely (although no Soco punch this year was a huge bummer), there was a video photo booth, a blogga lounge, a "general" store where I saw Colin Hanks buy some sweet ray-bans, some sort of scarf screen printing station, ping pong table, benches made out of tires... all kinds of shenannigans. And of course, there were the bands. While perhaps not as strong of a line up as in past years, it was still a good time - I especially enjoyed seeing Local Natives still sounding as sweet as ever. Check out the Fader Fort social media landing page for everything you missed, and (bonus!) some photos and tunes are below for you. local natives neon indian This soco and tea is so taaaasty (standing in some music experiment shack that I couldn't figure out) ping pong-ing it up Neon Indian & the crowd 2 free beers. 2 dolla bills. baller Washing Out w/ Small Black (that guy = the cutest) My friend Damon hanging out in the blogger lounge, where serious journalists came to get awaaaay from it all. The Pains of Being Pure At Heart This is the first of several SXSW posts that I will try to have up on this blog before December 2010. Haaaa. Thanks for reading! 2010/03/29Tally Hall featuring Casey Shea live at Rockwood Music HallLast night, Tally Hall capped their March Tour with a special performance for friends and family and anyone lucky enough to check their twitter account about an hour beforehand at the super tiny Rockwood Music Hall. In short, it was totally awesome, and to elaborate they played a good mix of old tunes mixed with tracks from their upcoming album - including one of my faves "Who You Are." Below is a video of the band performing one of Casey Shea's songs, "Life In A Cube." Casey has been filling in for Joe on this tour and he seriously did an AMAZING job. I, however, did NOT do an amazing job shooting this video so sorry about that, but at least it SOUNDS good. Regular posts including SXSW recaps forthcoming this week, I swearz. posted by n. @ 3/29/2010
2010/03/112 Legit To Quit Yeasayer (video for One)
Yeasayer "ONE" By: Radical Friend from ODDBLOOD on Vimeo. Can we talk about this Yeasayer video for "One" please? First of all, I love this song. A lot. I love the whole album. LOVE IT. And this video... it's pretty crazy. I mean it has morphing head guy, and he's going to a party that is basically like the Shank but with more laser cats and a sparkle cage match. And Yaysayer is there and they are playing what appear to be sex toys and a crystal simon: Then people wearing MC Hammer pants do a dance, a girl drinks an apple tini (in williamsburg! really?) and morphing head guy plays some game from the future with a bunch of people who look like extras from Party Monster. And really, why is this guy at the party in the first place? Did he RSVP to a retweet from the Fader Fort? Because that shit, my friends, will get you banned from fun for life. In short, watch this video. And listen to the song Yeasayer = One posted by n. @ 3/11/2010
2010/03/10SHARK?Oh man, these songs have been stuck in my head all day, from Brooklyn band Shark? and yes they spell it with a question mark at the end. Although if you ASK someone "shark?" it probably means you are about to get eaten by one. Anyways, these low-fi tracks are the dopeness, like I want to put on a black beret a turtle neck and do some groovy art-house dance to them while I smoke some cloves (I will never do this, because I am a terrible dancer, haven't smoked a clove since my roommate tricked me into it when i was a freshman in college, and I look way bad in turtlenecks, but this is just the effect I'm going for). I bet this music would be fun to listen to on shrooms also. God this is a great review, I hope my dad reads it (hi dad!). In essence, listening to the shark? album "Noise Maker" makes me write stuff like this blog entry. Get on that train: Shark? - (I Don't Believe In) Miracles Shark? - Let's Roll They will be at SXSW!
