Hi SKYBOX!
If you know me at all, you know that I have a special place in my heart for bands from the windy city that I call my hometown. So last week when, standing outside Mercury Lounge recovering from the Ima Robot show, I got a call from my friend Benji freaking the fuckout about this band Skybox from Chicago that he was throwing a last minute showcase for, I was totally into it. So I dragged my well buzzed self to Annex around 12:30 that night to check out with Benji had been going on about enough to help this band book their SECOND show in one evening, and was quite glad that I did. Honestly, I don't even know how to describe their music, except that it's quirky and happy and kind of all over the place in a wonderful sort of way.
After the band's charming manager let me sell merch for a while for no apparent reason, I grabbed a copy of their fairly off the radar debut album Arco Isis and have had it on solid rotation for the past few days. It definately is worth listening to from beginning to end, and has this very (dare I say) Tally Hall-esque vaudeville quality to it. The band will be back for CMJ and are certainly worth checking out if you're tired of seeing Birdmonster for the 50th time (just kidding, I LOVE Birdmonster). Oh and speaking of birds, check the cute lil' partridge family thing they have going on with that album cover (yes, I'm a dork).
Finally, listen:
